I haven't used Lisa to tell a story because there's no call for snakes in any of the prize counters.
But I'm having the problem reported above, that neighbor snakes give nothing more than cash. They should be brains if not eggs.
I did stop getting brains from zombies but i thought I'd reached a daily limit from neighbor visits, which is usual, so i didn't worry.
Hopefully we are just unfamiliar with the routine and this isn't glitch fest again.
Keep us posted John! Thanks!
I meant in my own town. When you sqish a nightmare which I understand to be zombies, snakes , skeletons, or bunnies your count should go up in the upgrade your campfire screen. Now nothing I tap in my town makes it move after reaching level 2 campfire. Previously snakes didn't count towards it. Now nothing does. I think it's glitched or I don't know what a nightmare is.
What does the icon next to your campfire update bar show? Still a zombie or some other currency? As I understand, only this currency will raise the bar.
I think that what you collect in your own town is generated by e.g. the snake log, the mausoleum etc. I just collected from my snake log and my upgrade camp fire to level 3 did not go up until I tapped the snakes roaming my town. And yes, the snake count did go up. I can't check any further as I have Martin tell a story right now, generating zombies, and I have apparently reached the limit for currency from friends' visits.
I interpreted the nightmares to only count if they related to the icon on the update bar. So to get to level 2, I need to get Martin to tell stories so Zombies would spawn, as they are the only thing that counts towards getting the upgrade in this instance.
Im as confused about Campfire update and Nightmares as you are, but what about the Terror? With this I mean the blue blob you release in friend's towns.
If I release one in another town I see a blue blob running around, but when I have a notification that someone released terror in my town, I cannot see a blue blob. Do they turn into something else?

When someone puts one in your town you have to track it down. And they are slippery! Still same purple guys but full of goodies. I think if you tap them early, they instantly respawn and you get double or triple the goods. That's how it appears anyway.
All my designs look unfinished because i can't place as many plants, streetlights, and fences as i would like. PLEASE REMOVE THE LIMIT, EA!
As others have said already: only one kind of nightmare is counted for each level
To upgrade to level 2 it's zombies
To upgrade to level 3 it's snakes
(at least for me, might differ for others)
It's indicated to the left of the counter bar, e.g. right now I'm collecting snakes for level 3, so I have a little snake's head to the left of the bar.

thanks this is true. I thought all nightmares. The trick is to look for which nightmare it wants and keep that kid telling stories that is associated with it (Lisa Snakes) till you build up that resource. I'm assuming Bunnies and Millhouse will be next since that was the last story told.

Very irritating that I didn't know that, because I put Lisa at work telling stories, and now all my kids are earning snakes, when all I need is zoombies.
Wonder if those snakes are lost, or do they add to an invisible snake account somewhere?

Yep. This is what I was saying about needing the right kid to generate the right currency.

I had the same problem. That's a shame, and it's very disappointing. It was poorly executed on their part I think that they didn't make it clear. In the storyline, it had me have Lisa tell a story. So I did and started generating snakes before I had upgraded the fire. Then it made me have Milhouse tell a story and it started generating bunnies before I had upgraded again. Glad to find this out at least.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm so grateful for the smart people in this forum.
It seems so obvious now.
Martin is back to telling stories and my town is generating zombies again so that I can get to level 2. I'm a little behind (frustrating!), but better late than never.

You are not behind. I think a lot of us (well - me) had the same problem, and many of my friends have not updated at all.

Level 4 Bunnies
Level 5 Bones
Level 6 Zombies
etc.
Also, when you upgrade the fire, the next counter starts as zero. So, if you tap on a snake when it want a zombie the snake is "lost". You won't get a head start when it's time for snakes.
So, here in the beginning, you want to have Lisa tell her 30 sec. story then go back to Martin for a 4 Hour Zombie story until you get your 200 zombies. Likewise, tell Milhouse's 30 sec. story then have Lisa immediately start her Snake story.
It also seems the hoard of monsters that emerge when all your kids finish with s'mores and the story teller finishes their 4 hour story depends on the story teller the kid was "listening to" at the start of the task. If you set 1/2 the Kids while Zombies are active then start Lisa's Snake story before assigning the other half, you'll get half 1 creature and half the other.

The snakes won't count as nightmares, but the snake eggs they drop will count towards crafting. Don't sweet it, you're figuring this out really early in the event, plenty of time to make up for it.
Do they count as terrors when tapped in neighbors' towns? I've already used up my friend visits so I can't check.
If so, does that mean we should check out who the storyteller is in a neighbor's town and only tap if it will be the correct currency? This could complicate friend visits a bit.

No snakes are registered... And not all zombies are registered either (I had to tap 12 zombies to go up by 5)...
Not sure about the bunnies, because i only tapped around 9 of them...

As has been mentioned, the zombie head next to the counter/bar means only zombies are counted towards the upgrade.
