I don't get it either. I'm in the same boat, about half way through the portal after racking up the other prizes easily. I'm sure sone jerk will be along shortly to mock our lack of effort.

A town can only hold 60 nightmares max. Barring abnormal sleeping schedules, your town should be full just from sleeping. So I saw tap away, as it's not worth trying to "save" some for Act 2.

Depends on how many kids you got (if they're premium or freemium) what level your fireplace is at, how many friend visits you got left and how often you visit or log on to the game, but my guess, is yes.

I also am at 1.5k +/- I don't see how I can get enough. I already run the kids every 4 hours. And still haven't got nearly enough. I visited every neighbor and dropped all my blobs. I'm stocked up on all the exta rabbit ears and all that. Not sure if I should just craft it all. ( as I don't believe it'll be used in the phase 2 )

Visiting neighbors and dropping the formless terrors won't help you get the gate to nowhere. You only earn crafting materials, you don't get any smores from neighbor visits.

The third post in the following thread has info on how to get smores. There is also info in that thread on how not to lose nightmares (hence lose smores) by tapping on the kids thumbs up before clearing your town and the bank. Basically, move away from the campfire and let them come to you.
