Wish I'd celebrated Groundhogs Day with one of these.

Is that a chipmunk, a squirrel, a prariedog, or a groundhog?

And if so, how can they be distinguished?

Oh yes, I've seen the movie. I just wondered if there was actually some sort of celebration called that over there in your parts

Celebration, no. Not for most people. Maybe in towns like the movie. There are more than one "famous?" Groundhogs. It's more of a running joke now

Yes. A groundhog tells us if winter is going to be over soon, or if we are going to suffer six more weeks. A gopher in Pennsylvania will emerge from his hole, and if he sees his shadow, that's bad and spring will come late. No shadow=good weather to come.
(This never applies to the Northern Plains because winter always lasts at least six more weeks.)

I think it's based on folklore and not on the scientific method.

In some places. Most famous is Punxsutawney, same place as the film was supposed to be in. Otherwise, not really that celebrated here. The rodents never seem to be right anyways, or maybe it's just the idiots they have reading the "shadows".

    This is a zebra:

To be perfectly clear, this animal has absolutely nothing to do with Groundhog Day.
