Now that we have the ability to create and save a complete town image, I have a fresh desire to acquire all the available land and NUKE MY TOWN. The complete image will make it so much easier to replan an entire town.

The problem is, nuking a full, 5+ y.o. town would hyperinflate the inventory, making it needlessly time consuming to rebuild it. There would be so much tedious scrolling while we rebuild. But this could be overcome easily with a basic, ALPHABETICAL INDEXER.

IF YOU BELIEVE EA SHOULD ADD AN ALPHABETICAL INDEXER TO THE INVENTORY GUI*, PLEASE "AGREE" OR "LIKE" THIS POST.

I know EA doesn't officially have representation here, but i also know that we've made loud requests for the UE Office job tool, the IRS office collection tool, the Area Select tool, the Store-All tool, and most recently the full town view tool. So SOMEONE may be listening to us. I think we should try, don't you?

A basic Alphabetical Indexer would be easy to add, because it wouldn't require a new categorization of every single item. It could be integrated with the current Inventory GUI (*graphic user interface - the control panel we tap) as a new tab. The new tab's window would have sub-tabs A-Z. Then we could jump directly to that letter. In the example above, I illustrated the C tab.

(Ideally the AI tab would have a search bar, where we could type in an item's name; but that's significant additional coding and requires a keyboard permission. So I'm not even asking for that. Keeping it simple for the best chance of being heard.)

PLEASE show your support for this simple tool that would save a lot of wasted time scrolling our inventories, and hopefully renew interest in major redesigns by veteran players.

***Anyone who really supports this request can help me in keeping this thread bumped up n' alive on the first page. ***
We have had some very aggressive and successful campaigns in the past. We can do it again. Thanks for your support!!

All my designs look unfinished because i can't place as many plants, streetlights, and fences as i would like. PLEASE REMOVE THE LIMIT, EA!

  • Bump! Although I am aghast at the thought of you nuking your town. Some of my neighbors seem to have nuked theirs, started a redesign and then apparently gave up at the enormity of it and threw stuff back in a hodgepodge.
  • No doubt. It is a huge undertaking to replace 10000+ items. But I'm actually excited (for the first time in a while) to get all the land. I want to make some major relocations to certain neighborhoods.

I remember how long it took just to build my original KL, and that was a measly 10x10 grid. Our latest town grid is immense. It's a big project, but i feel the motivation. Most of the changes i want to make are just too big. A clean slate would be fun. (I hope, lol!)

NUKE NUKE NUKE NUKE NUKE NUKE NUKE NUKE NUKE NUKE NUKE NUKE NUKE :o:D

Loved nuking and rebuilding my town last year... but yes the inventory was a total nightmare! I'd like to see an alphabetical one. Great idea :)

  • Would love to have everything in alphabetical order. Always a nightmare looking for one item. :)
    Here have a banana!!
  • Yes. Something like this should be implemented
  • Agreed!
  • This would be an awesome leap forward. I clicked both "like" AND "agree"

Would the alpha index letter strip whatchamacallit also appear when I am in a subcategory? (Like "fences" )

And not to be a party pooper, but there's no way on God's good earth that I would have looked under the letter "C" for that birdbath. I'd never remember that it started with the word "cherub" ... same with the names they've assigned to lots of other stuff.

But your suggestion would STILL be a MASSIVE move forward. Count me in.

I'd also add that I wish the storage screen wouldn't close every time I've retrieved something. But I assume the placement of the object in the town is part of its identifier in the code and if that made any sense it is a miracle.

  • I couldn't agree more!

However, on one hand, the thought of nuking your masterpiece scares me, but I also am intrigued at what you would do with a clean slate. If only somehow you can save what you did with the Springfield dam, I would be all in. Ultimately it is up to you though, as others have said I have seen a lot of players nuke and end up quitting, so be wary...

  • I would hope that sorting A-Z would apply to all existing categories, like FENCES, etc.

It IS tricky to find things without knowing their unique names, like the cherub bird bath, which is why a search bar would be ideal. But that does increase the complexity of the request significantly, which is why i avoided it. A Google search of the TSTO wiki would be our best reference for correct names of things hard to find.

I would also like to see consistency applied across the categories, in regard to memory of scroll position. Some do stay on what you've selected, like when I plant KeMs, i can reopen and still see the KeM ready to reselect. But some categories annoyingly restart from the beginning of their list. This is a separate issue, but it'd be nice to see fixed.

Ooooh, you're right. That IS a design i pulled off during a glitch, which i would not be able to duplicate.

I was thinking about the various buildings i have which are currently on pavement, but would get rejected in a rebuild. My Monsarno campus would be impossible to rebuild, for example. I was prepared to sacrifice that. And i have some yellow barricades that are on roads, as they were once allowed but no more.

But idk about losing my Springfield Heights Reservoir. I do like that one.
Thanks for reminding me of this!

If only this could happen !
It is indeed very annoying that the inventory list restarts.
I somtimes just stop trying to find what I was looking for !

Maybe, if you have your heart set on nuking, try ti use the group storage function to save it. I have an old town that I'm going to try it out on, duplicating the circumstances as best I can. I'll let you know how it works out.

Edit: group storage worked. The items remained stired after the nuke. At least for me they did.

Also, I’ve been requesting the census to be broken into pieces for a while now. Even if it’s just A-D, E-H, etc. As mentioned above, getting to Uter, or Gan forbid, Zutroy, is also a big pita. But not nearly as much as the current inventory setup. It’s almost easier to find a specific thing in my daughter’s room than it is to find something in the inventory. (If you saw my daughter’s room, you’d know why I said ‘almost’.)

Also, a ‘Placed Items’ inventory tab would be very handy. Example: Can’t find your Holiday Light Plunger? Find it in your ‘Placed Items’, select it, and be taken to its location in your town.

My town has gotten waaay behind in designing. A lot of which has to do with time and health issues, but mainly just because it’s so difficult to navigate the inventory that it’s just not as fun anymore.

    Great post, 4j3k!
