Lol, I'd love to see someone try to "hack" a gas pump!
LMAO, I may have been stretching my example. ;-)

Oh I get it now. So if small sects or as you refer to them "cults" of people are breaking the law than you approve. Nice. :?

Oh btw, Gary, I'll be over your place later with a couple friends. I know you won't mind if we take a few things when we leave.

I've seen these hacks before. It's amazing that much of the data from last year is still in the game files. People use cheats on every game, so it's really up to you if you want to use them or not. There are more people who pay than cheat, hence the fact that this game is one the top earners in the Apple store. I would think, though, that 87K donuts would raise a red flag somehow.

If your taking a copy of digital goods i doubt he will care ;) after all he will still have those things you will have a copy. The donuts in the game arent physical if someone stole 8,000,000 there is still a never ending supply infact it wont make a single change to you or the game or the developer because if he is going to hack he did this because he doesnt want to buy the donuts anyway so no one lost anything.

just wanted to clear up that this is not stealing as nothing is missing. ;)

Spot on, its copying. Go to his house and leave with what you want, if nothing goes missing from his I'm sure he won't mind.
how people can say getting stuff for free ruins the game is beyond me. The designing is the fun part, not spending my wages that I can use for other activites.

On things like FIFA where there is interaction hacks do matter as a cheat can take advantage of an honest player when competing head to head. On this game no one is really affected are they? And what satisfaction can a cheat get? I think everyone's overreacting a little bit.

Yeah, arguing semantics will get you nowhere.
You're either lying to yourself or completely misinformed to suggest hacking is not stealing because it's not tangible. I'm not going to explain copyright or property laws to you, what I will say is that I make my living selling digital files and images. If my clients start copying and sharing my property, my baby girl goes hungry. For every "copy" of my goods there is, that's one less sale I get and one less paycheck I recieve.
It is illegal, plain and simple. My friend, you are dishonest and incorrect.

When I first read the subject title,
    I thought this was a whistleblower's thread! :)
A while ago I started noticing neighbors with weird stuff
going on in their towns, I thought of server glitches.
Is that multiple escalators I see?

this is where your going wrong you feel every copy made is a lost sale but in reality not a single person who would hack would buy your goods. As a android developer myself i feel your pain but its something you need to accept you cant force people to buy if they dont want to but of course if its going free they dont mind and really you didnt lose a sale if they was never going to buy

Still with the semantics. I'm only going to say this one more time:
    Illegal.

Illegal? i dont see how breaks the terms and conditions yeah but illegal? i doubt anyone will go prison or court for manipulating a donut counter. i doubt its even copy theft because its all within the game world its not like you made a new game using their content.

lets not make a huge deal out of it im just saying you never lost a penny i think it boils down to jealousy someone got free gifts and you didnt so now your gonna complain which is fine i get that just dont go round shouting hes a thief

Please don't make assumptions. I'm stating clear fact, no blind assumption. Jealousy? Yes I'm just as jealous of this (hypothetical) person as I am with any bank robber. Do yourself a favor, go back and read my comments. I am not lighting a pitchfork, I am stating that a comment made was wrong and it needed to be said.
And just for the record, I didn't call a hacker a thief. Though, hacking with the result to acquire goods without purchase is in fact theft.

actually no thats not theft. Theft happens if you take something and deprive the owner of it which is not the case here no one is even aware.

you said you would take a couple friends to his house to take a few things to imply basically lets see how you like it. you also said My friend, you are dishonest and incorrect. just because i dont feel anything has been stolen. Even now you said about a bank robber so its clear you do feel a hacker is a theif yet your asking me not to make assumptions?

i dont know what your problem is but it seems you only want facts well your whole arguement is wrong then because back to before you cant prove you lost a single sale you dont know how much imaginary stock is missing and infact you dont appear to be missing anything. your just stressing for no reason it did not effect you thats why i said jealousy im sorry for saying that i just didnt agree with you calling me dishonest for seeing things their way

Allow me to restate my problem. It was mentioned that hacking is okay so long as it is a small group doing the hacking. My problem is that taking things that do not belong to you without proper compensation (even if the items being taken are not tangible) is still wrong. Wrong on a smaller scale, but still wrong.

apologies i jumped in after that was said and agree no there shouldnt be any group of any size doing this.

Wrong on a smaller scale, but still wrong.

Yes i agree with that it is wrong but if said person is not going to buy it ever im sure they can live with the minor negative moral feeling untill it gets wipped out by the extreme happiness of what was it 8700 donuts? then move on not affecting a single soul.

lets leave the police work to ea im sure the developers are working on closing any hacks for their big updates.

I can see your a good person and obviously you dont like this behaviour but really this is ea's fault its an online game and yet its mostly handled client side? if the donuts was server side this wouldnt happen change that number and it doesnt match the server youd get kicked.

lets agree the problem is the hacking not the so called theft

    Anyone remember the Napster lawsuit?

Hacking is illegal. Downloading copyright data is illegal without permission. Laws still do exist in this country, don't they?

downloading music is a crime, modding a game isnt its just breaking the rules set by ea. no one who did this downloaded anything they shouldnt and there wont be a lawsuit especially from 3 screenshots.

and what country are you from this is the internet that could be anywhere but im going to assume your from the US and i dont think your hacking laws will have much effect on say a hacker living in india or china but anyway thats a different type of hacking this really shouldnt be called hacking its just modding a few game values but hacking sounds cool or smart we have all seen bits of the files all over this forum hence the squidport update and krustyland its not illegal

This thread has really taken off, my opinion on the matter is that people who can't / won't / hack, are very staunch in their views that hacking is illegal and immoral and so forth.

After all if you are paying good money for donuts in the legitimate way, of course you'll have a strong opinion when you see these screenshots of 87k donuts. It is only natural.

I just think it's funny how everyone is so anti hack on this game in particular, because of some legal or ethical morality?

While you sit back and download the latest Taylor Swift album and game of thrones episode, or whatever else

And as if none of you people have ever cheated on a game before? I used to use a gameshark to hack pokemon onto my game, instead of spending hours trading between devices, buying the game link cable and all the other associated crap needed to get all the pokemon

Final thought, if you download anything on the internet, it would be hypocritical to call thief onto others for hacking this game.

I guess if you do download tv shows and music illegally and still want to have a moral high ground over someone who hacks this game in particular, that's your prerogative
