So those of us in Australia will have a few days of not being able to play it? (full updates never appear in the Australian app store until a few days later, but the old version is usually at least playable). Awesome, thanks guys! Love getting locked out of things!

What are you talking about? Australia usually gets the updates before anyone else. But, I suspect this time, on Dec 5th, the update will go out to the app store all at once.
I don't know about previous updates, but the most recent App Store update on November 8th (only visible change was title screen) was not required to continue playing the game.
For those that have played longer, did the earlier updates require upgrading to the newest version before you could continue playing?
Excuse my poor wording. The timeline is probably looser than my original wording suggests. You shouldn't have to plan anything. My intent with that post was simply to say that it won't be an option to continue using an older client version indefinitely.
What I meant was "Older clients will eventually be forced to update".

Sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for clearing that up! This is more like what I would have expected.
Does this mean that the stability improvements brought in v4.0 will not be fully realized until support for v3.0.1 is discontinued? Any idea how soon that might happen?
Which stability improvements are you referring to specifically?
Any client side changes will be seen as soon as you update.
Server side changes happen (usually) without anyone noticing, independent of client updates.
You mentioned a few weeks ago that this update might make the game playable on slower 3G connections and more stable on wifi.
I have since seen a bit of improvement over 3G, but a significant decline in stability on wifi. On wifi I am now seeing server connection errors about two to three times as often as previously, and am also getting app crashes a few times per day where previously there were none.
I would expect that any crashing improvements would be seen immediately, but will network connection errors be reduced with the update, or only once the server is optimized for the 4.0 client and no longer supports 3.0.1?
Hi, I would be grateful if one could confirm my understanding. Assumption (or certain or whatever), EA will release the update via App Store. I am playing on 3 gen. ipad so I am going to treat this update as one of the 'regular' updates. Namely, when I go to App Store > purchased, the simpsons tapped out will show 'update' as the previous updates. Then I will update and the game is going to 'playable' WITHOUT requiring me to get involved in any techincal additional action. Thanks a lot.

You only have to go to the app store and to the updates section. The purchased part is not necessary. But you are correct. It's an update like any other app update. It just carries more significance.

That is my understanding.
The only difference from previous App Store updates is that 1st and 2nd gen iPhones and iPod touches will not be able to download the update, and at some point after the release you will no longer be able to play with the current version (meaning you ignored the App Store update notification).
Wait does this mean I have to delete the app and then re-download it again? I am confused...
You won't have to delete the app. But you will have to update it through the iTunes App Store before you will be able to get online and play it.
Thanks for answering my question!
I had to tell my cousin who was at level 20 to register an account on Origin or else if he is logged out all his data will be lost, when I told him that his face went so pale and I knew that he must have spent donuts on it too lol, luckily his town was saved cause of me but I feel that EA needs to push it a little more to let people know to make sure they need an account

Yes, or you won't be able to play.
