do you have any tips?

I tend to pick bldgs associated with characters. More characters = more tasks = more $$ for the non character bldgs.

I'm really far behind on my buildings:
    building tasks:
    -The Frying Dutchman-$43000
    -Herman's Military Antiques-$83000
    -Fat Tony's Compound-$85000
    -El Chemistri-$71500
    -Post Office-$69000
    that's a total of around $351,500
and currently I have like $20,00
I'm starting with cheapest first, but leaving Squidport (The Frying Dutchman) till last
and buying the cheapest ones first
when one character goes on a ask then all the others go on same time challenges, I usually have my "useless" character (the ones that aren't involved in tasks, so mainly the events ones) are usually on 12hour tasks
    I'm on Level 30

You are not that behind... I'd go with the Compound first. You get TWO characters (Legs and Louie). Then go Herman. You'll need the post office if you still have Smither's quests on going. You don't need El Chemestri until you have Ralph. So if you are looking to wrap up quests, you may want those first. If not, I'd go with the Compound since you'll get 2 characters. Frying Dutchman can wait until you want it. However, if you use 8 hour tasks a lot, you may want to get it soon so the Captain gets his 8 hour.

Premium items then. More characters = more cash

Also, the shorter the task and the quicker the repetiation, the more money you make. If you can do 1 hour tasks, do them. If you can't, try for 4 hour or 8 hour. 12/24 should only be used if you really can't log into the game within that time frame. A 4 and 8 hour task in 12 hours is worth more than the 12. So pick the time frame that fits your schedule and ability to log in.

My advice is not to stress about it. I'm all leveled up and then some and only built El Chemistri about a week ago. Next on the list is Wolfcastle's mansion, but I don't think that's going to happen until the Halloween event is over, because I keep spending money on the spooktacular bonus. (Donuts are king.) I have a mini-housefarm sitting on the land I bought for it until then.

Anyway, it's not so bad to level up faster than you build. Once you're all leveled, that XP from building contributes to bonus levels, which also gives you a chance at donuts!
(Speaking of donuts, build Herman's shop next, and pay attention when he starts wanting to take over City Hall. The reward for that questline is not a disappointment at all.)

When I was really hurting for cash early on, I would farm Perfection for awhile. It's super tedious but can be quite profitable if you have the time. Then fall classes started and I did not have the time for that anymore.
I would also advise getting Bumblebee Man if you have the donuts. He can be a major contributer to cashflow.

    I'm starting with characters
so Fat Tony's compound first then Herman

When you get a little higher in levels, you'll want Eddie and Lou. That's the SWAT van decoration and that gives 2 characters as well. So that should be more important than other buildings you have at the time.

Also I believe the SWAT van is an immediate build, so no waiting.

Try the 2-4 hour tasks if you can (it's helped me a lot). I also don't do house farm and have done well in my opinion without having to.

I'd build fat Tonys compound (I just built mine about 2 days ago) you get 2 characters plus tax pay from the house

I'm working on Herman's military antiques next

Yup! The SWAT van is instant build, plus I love Eddie and Lou! (If anything, just to hear Lou say “Aside from my gun, the only thing that makes me feel like a man is my enormous genitals.” HAH!!)

But yeah...like others have said, do as many short tasks as possible...that'll maximize your money and xp. Always have something growing on Cletus's farm, and have something broadcasting at the TV station. Collect your scratch offs as soon as they are ready. Collect from your houses and businesses as soon as they are ready. Just doing that stuff will make your cash grow. It's not a race, so no need to hurry...there will come a time where you sorta run out of stuff to buy, so cash will stack up, and then you can work on buying all the land. Hope this helps!
