Forget about new characters for now...

Fences that take no space. By this I mean, fences that can have other landscaping placed immediately adjacent to them on either side.

While I generally agree with your suggestions I would like say that I had a stop sign in my yard. I lived on the corner of the exit of a subdivision. I had the stop sign for exiting the subdivision and also a fire hydrant in my front/side yard that I had to mow around.

    Great idea!

I'll also add being able to size water or pavement one square at a time instead of how it is now.

Being able to put stop signs on sidewalks instead of yards. Have you ever seen a stop sign in someone's yard? No, they are placed on sidewalks. That's more of a pet peeve of mine though.
My first car accident was because a stop sign was in somebody's yard instead of on the sidewalk. The person's tree had grown out in front of the sign, though not enough to cover had it been on the sidewalk. Trust me, placement was a pet peeve of mine that day, too.

I really want some easier way to find characters in the game. I was seriously beginning to question my standard practice of keeping everyone outside as much as possible when it took me close to 3 minutes to find Kirk Van Houten in amongst the crowd. At least he'd be happy to know that somebody took the time to look for him.

Where I live all stop signs are in yards and not on sidewalks. I find this very odd

Yeah, I should have added that to my character list idea. I don't know how many times I give up looking for One of the kids. Martin seems to blend into everything.

I would like to see the friends list sorted by how long it's been since you last visited them. So, essentially you wouldn't have to scroll along because the first screen would always have the neighbours you needed to visit next.

^^^THIS. Probably the thing that drives me nuts the most.

Let's talk about things we'd like to see to improve gameplay overall.

The biggie for me would be a character control panel. It's getting more and more difficult to track down every character and send them on task. We need something to show us who is on task, how long is left on their task and who isn't on task. It could be combined into the existing character collection list.
I was thinking the same thing. A little long winded but good suggestion.

Perhaps a 'store all' or 'select all' function?
    >>> A more practical idea would be to make an select tool like the water/road function, and you just drag it over the area of 4x4 that you want to store, and it stores that designated area when you tick it.

^^ like this, but instead of water/road - it just selects all the decorations in the highlighted area.

Probably would be too laggy, but it would definitely improve convenience during redesigns

I would like to be able to rotate things in any direction....buildings, parking places, benches, etc.

I would also like to see a cancel button, similar to the new feature of canceling a rushed task, that would allow you to cancel a character's job during the "waiting" period before the character actually starts the job.

360 degree rotation is the biggest thing I want. I don't know why I can't delete the jack o lanterns. I also would like more shrubbery and flowers.

    - definetly need character locator or at the minimum an idle character locator
    - task cancellation
    - characters go for swim in ocean when idle.

just off the top of my head

My characters already walk over the ocean to get to squidport. It would be nice if path finding was fixed

As for the 360 rotation, I think maybe just decorations rather than buildings

And idle character locator is a must

I want mine alphabetical. I'm either looking for anyone with actions available, or someone specific. Maybe the best thing would be a number of options that we can choose between so everyone can organise it in a way that suits them best.

Everyone has great suggestions, but at this point I can't ask for anything other than improved game performance. Halloween was the most frustrating event yet--as awesome as it was--due to the lag and crashes. One would figure that after the game was free of the rolling fog, scurrying gremlins, haunted building animations, and ghosts that the game would run smoothly. Instead, it seems just as bad as it was before.

Server updates please, EA. Get on it.

I think you should be able to create your own tasks for the characters. Like you could create a "Show kids a boring film on a faulty film projector" task for Principal Skinner and assign it to Springfield Elementary. They could also offer so many animations to sign to visible outdoor tasks.

Also, a "Simpsons character creator" option would be welcome, with the option for you to record audio samples for your own character, create it's looks and create tasks for it.

    Dirt.

As in, a dirt land tile to go with the grass and pavement. Some places (Nelson's house) look out of place without it.
