EA has been really generous this holiday. If you look at the premium items, the only big tag items this holiday is Santa's Village (200 donuts), which was just a re-release from last Christmas. Both Costington's and Claus Co are free. EA didn't have to do that. I think its fair that EA has some premium content this Christmas.
Admittedly, I don't understand the thought process behind releasing Grumple Christmas Eve but that doesn't matter.
Just to play 'devils advocate', how about if he was free ONLY to people who have spent over $xx on donuts this year? After all, they are the ones who are financing it for the free players? Shouldn't there be some sort of 'loyalty scheme' whereby people who spend, money on it, get items that are specific to the 'scheme'?
Let's have everyone comment on this thread to make The Grumple free!! Somewhere, people are saying that on X-mas Eve, he's going to be for 120 dounts. This is totally not fair considering it will be near christmas and I think we all should deserve something free on / near that day. Everyone, comment here to agree for EA to make The Grumple Free!!!!

Just throwing the idea out there?...
Your reward for funding the game is exclusive content the freebies do not receive, such as cool buildings, characters, and decorations. How about that?

Have to say they have been generous but after Hallloween and all those free doughnuts it feels like they being harsh lol

Quite true, but there's buying donuts every few months and then there buying donuts every other week? Bigger spending players should maybe "deserve" a limited item specific to how much they spend?
Why is it that everyone thinks they're entitled to things being free? Almost everything dealing with this Christmas update has been free minus Santa's Village. In previous updates, when could you say that? I think EA actually was generous with this update making the GREAT majority of new items free. Heck, none of these items costed money in the game either.. And yet some of you want more free stuff.

There is. It's a little more direct than the method you suggest; people pay for donuts, and then spend the donuts on the premium content.
