This thread is freemium players (house farmers) against premium players (multipliers)! Each method works, although premium makes you heaps more in the long run and I use that method as I have almost every item being a completionist and have no need for house farms (never did). I also believe house farms are an ugly addition to your Springfield but there is no denying that they work! Just for perspective, I have always been a premium player and I habe a massive multiplier ( I have over 200 million).
I have to disagree, in my case at least.
I started in July and have not spent a single dollar on the game. I also do not have a house farm. I do have about 6 or 7 brown houses but that is for people to tap on during this event.
I am maxed out on levels, at least 4 or 5 above 38, and I have every building (no motivationals) and about 500,000 in cash. Granted I have a lot of land to buy, but I am waiting until after Christmas. If you play on a fairly regular basis, use the shortest tasks possible ( given that you will not have them wandering - so if you plan on playing again in 9 hours, put your people on 8 hour tasks), and visit friends, you can advance in the game pretty steadily. You do not need to farm, or spend real money. Of course if you want to do either of those things, you are free to do so - it's your game to play.
I started in July and read about house farming on a blog. Had about 50 brown houses that I would tap at meal times. Having those houses and 100 friends got me to Level 17 in a month. That when I came to this forum. I removed my housefarm and then solely focused on 1 hr tasks.
Now I just Ch6 farm. Being a freemium player and having 40+ characters at Level 37, it nets me about 80K per day. :P
I have a blue house farm (too advanced for you right now) you can follow others advice with cheaper houses.
I also spent 200-300 donuts on multiplier items. My multiplier is 52%. Best items: police car, burns limo, channel 6 van, etc. good walkthroughs a online are available.

First Year 2012 Player @ Game Level 939 & 3,200% XP
The game can seem painstakinly slow at first, but once farther along money is not a concern at all. Veteran players sit on millions of in game dollars and makes humdreds of thousands a day.
Whatever you end up doing with the houses, it will probably look like you house farm regardless lol
I just started building more houses than the tasks dictated when I reached Level 37. I chose white houses because of their smaller footprint and I basically did not want to click on a hundred or more houses every 4 hours anyway. The white houses you collect $200 every 12 hours I think.
I only started building more white houses because I finally wanted to work on my "Indolence" star rating. Before I started building white houses, my rating was only at about 2 and a half stars...then about 30-40 white houses later, I finally achieved the full 5 star rating.
I could build more but it already looks like a house farm anyway. If I ever reach 50 million in this game I guess I will store all those extra white houses.
DON'T HOUSE FARM YOU'LL RUIN YOUR TOWN, YOU'LL MAKE MONEY NO MATTER WHAT, HAVE PATIENCE
Wrong, not with updates costing $250,000+ every 2 weeks. You oldies who played when there were only 20 levels did not need to house farm because you saved up your money since there was nothing to buy. The economy has changed. Inflation is up. We are living paycheck to paycheck these days, no savings accounts like you had in your day.
If you already have the tv station broadcast Arnie Pie which has a $7500 payout. Do not tap it when it is ready. Place it on your landing zone for visiting neighbors to tap and each tap will give you the $7500 payout. Its not much but it will help. If you have multiplier items it will increase your winnings

Im going to use very rough numbers off the top of my head as estimations, to prove you are liars.
There are approximately 60 characters.
Free ones make $600 on a 24 hr task a there are say 35
DOnut ones make $1000 on a 24 hr task - there are say 25
That is at most 40,000 a day + collecting buildings = 25,000
=65,000 a day
Not logging on at the same exact second their tasks get done, ur going to have some overlap so you can't make that 7 days a week. Let us say 6 days a week
= 390,000 per week MAX
So you can make 780,000 in 2 weeks
Now the update is going to take half of that because of the building inflation and decorations.
And again the next two weeks-
So you will make 780,000 that month. X 12 months= 9mill per year.
Now minus the aspirationals and land that new players still need. You are in the negative.
You are just confirming what everone else is saying:
dont send your characters on long tasks. If you go for the one hour tasks where you get 70p.h. And send them over night for max 8h you do sugnificantly better than your calculation.
I make without big efforts about 600000 in three to four days with only a few premium characters and a not too high multiplier.
So you confirmed it. Welcome to the league of liars (what a strong word)
If liars is a strong word :P you take this too seriously.
You're still going to have overlap if you don't login the second they finish their task. So those extra couple dollars from short tasks may be negligible.
I want to know how you make 600,000 in 4 days, because I don't see how in general terms. I would need to know exact steps in order to test it.

first: i may have mistakenly pressed flag instead of reply. If so, sorry, mistake, i tried to stop it immediately. Keys on my phone are to small.
Sure, i have a spot for a neighbor free, then you can see my town for the buildings if you want.
I visit all my neighbors daily so that adds up as well
my multiplier is 31 or so, nothing special.
I send my characters several times a day on one hour tasks plus the 8h night shift.
roughly:
8 or 9 times a day for 60mins plus the 8h night task is more or less 1000 plus multiplier. That really add up.
I was actually a bit nervous that people would say how low i am a day (its just about 150000)
