I had the same idea a few days ago when discussing it with my girlfriend - currently I'm trying to build up a pretty decent Squidport and while I'm not normally an advocate for glitching, its honestly much quicker if you can get your friends to tap tiles for you.
When the depot served as a "landing zone control", all I had to do was put it near my Squidport and write a small sign with bushes/pumpkins/etc for friends to click and I was able to get plenty of clicks during Christmas.
Now that my landing zone has defaulted back to where it normally is, I've had to move things around to create a SECOND message asking people to tap my Squidport, with an arrow directing them there. Its a bit of an inconvenience as I now have two big signs in my town written in what is essentially foliage and it just doesn't look nice at all.
Outside of the whole "direct people to X or Y" function it would serve, it would also make it a lot easier to have people land in particular sections of your town that you're especially proud of. For example, near a premium/limited time item that you were really happy about getting.
Fantastic concept, really wish they'd implement it. I can see so many benefits to it with almost no negatives (although it'd be nicer if they designed a smaller, 1x1 or 2x2 tile object that filled the same role as the depot isn't exactly attractive and generally looks awkward wherever you place it :P )
I don't see why EA can't restore landing zone functionality to the Present Depot but also make it store-able. It shouldn't be difficult. That way, the people who want to choose their landing zone with the Present Depot can do so and those who want the landing zone in the default/middle can also do so.
(I realize that there are other, better suggestions such as choosing a tile; but, that stuff takes a lot more time to implement. Reverting Present Depot functionality and simply making it store-able is the simple, several lines of code solution.)
I completely agree with the OP. I would like to have my LZ on the outskirts of town where my brown houses are because I visit so often that it is usually the only buildings that are easily tapped. I can't move them to my current LZ because it would completely ruin my design. I think it should be a small easily disguised object. Something that could be hidden behind a building or tree.

what if i want the ugly present depot in my town hidden behind clause co so i am getting money and xp from it but i don't want that to be my landing zone
the only way i want this implemented is if somehow in the building menu there is an option to set landing zone and then you just select the specific square you want as the landing zone. I would not want it tied to an item of our choosing or otherwise.
Completely agree with this. I think it would just make more sense to be able to designate a specific landplot as the "landing zone", rather than a decoration/building.
I don't know the logistics of programming these items, but if EA gave us the ability to pick a decor/building as our LZ, that would mean they would have to put that coding in for every single item in the game, as there would be someone, somewhere that would use it as such. Coding it to just the land plots would be simpler, I would think.
That said, I'd be willing to work with whatever EA's willing to throw out to us, even if it meant re-activating the metal tree as the LZ triggerpoint. It might not be the prettiest thing out there, but it'd be better than having no control over it at all. :P

i would rather have no control than to have to look at the ugly metal thing every time i open my game
Recenter and rebuild. I'm about to overhaul my Springfield to incorporate the Halloween and Christmas buildings and to utilize the new land that we got at Halloween. If the Present Depot was the automatic landing zone it would screw up my plans.
Honestly the Jebediah Springfield statue should be the "Landing Zone Marker" as it is situated in the town square. But because it's a secret item, it obviously can't be.

Seems EA will need to make a decision, if they do agree to use the tree.
This game is tagged as a social one. At its core is the interchange of creative renditions of one player's town with other neighbors. There is a reason they use the terminology "friends". This is a game of IMAGES, after all. Images are the game's raison d'etre.
I would HOPE that they keep the game's central goal in mind when they decide whether to base priorities on enhancing the playing of the game or whether they decide that players' profit of pretend money is the most important. I frankly don't play to rack up dollars and XP.
You are right about one thing. It IS the principle of the thing that should rule here. EA just has to choose which set of principles to apply.
(I always wanted to be able to actually use "raison d'etre" in a sentence. I'm totally showing off. )
USA/UK Race To Throw Country Into Utter Chaos = TOO CLOSE TO CALL
I miss being able to determine the Landing Zone and not just for myself _ I've already maxed out on the so-called Squidport tile 'glitch'. But it's more difficult now to help out friends by having to search out and tap on their SP tile, corn, etc. With the three bonus donuts becoming increasingly more difficult to achieve (I need 1,000,000+ XP) these 'premium' decorations can make a big difference.
I don't mind either way, it would be nice I guess if I had a lovely piece of my town to show but currently mine isn't great. I stored the present depot when unrealised it was so little a payout as its ugly
They should make the landing zone spot the lemon tree...
It's iconic, small enough to put almost anywhere and/or hide behind your building you want tapped, and not too hard to get. And for those who haven't gotten it from the mystery box, they can charge like 30 donuts or something for it.
I like the idea of being able to control my landing zone. I think the metal tree is kindof ugly and plan on having it out in enchanted forest that I am working on for the holiday items. Also, they would need to make it available again for new players.
I think they should create something new to set the landing zone. Maybe a little coin with an X on it. Only one square so easy to hide/fit.
Then charge cash or a donut for people that want it, otherwise it defaults to the middle.

Nobody saying that it needs to so so big an ugly. And, if you are so worried about 35/hour, then you have other issues.
I don't know if you noticed but it is big and ugly.
It't the principle of it. If it generates money i want it in my town.
