Way of finding out how many boxes you have opened?

If you want a rough idea, try this. Count up all pink and blue prizes. Figure out how many Easter fences, divide by 3. Gold boxes are probably where the rough idea part comes in. Count pastel fences, divide by 2. Add this number to the number of other gold prizes won. This will tell you how many gold boxes have been opened. Now the guessing part. Once you know how many gold boxes, multiply this by 3. I use 3 as an average of the number of pinks and blues combined to earn a gold.
Add and solve.

I've just been keeping track of what I get when I open a box.

My overall thought is that I'm going to do my best to win this event the freemium way and if at the end I don't get the prizes I want I'm going to quit.

There's no sense in playing a game thats set to make you fail even if you work your hardest.

I've decided I'm in the same boat as you. I've been playing for over 18 months but if I don't feel any satisfaction from this event I think I'll be okay quitting this addiction.

I hear you. This event has been frustrating. Today is reflective of this whole campaign for me... after 4 days of having some baskets out with no activity, I get some neighbors to help with my uncommon baskets. Woo whoo! At this point I have 1200+ of my blue eggs (my uncommon color) to spin, I mean, spend. 1st spin - decorative eggs (great...), 2nd spin - 300 golden eggs (all is not lost). Now I have 700 golden eggs, so spin I do - pastel fence (great... up to 24).

So far during this event, I've obtained the Banana Dictatorship. Everything else has been beach towels, fences, decorative eggs, decorative trees or, the dreaded, build me up by giving me golden eggs after spinning tons of pink, only to have me spin and give me back freaking pink eggs (my common color) for a net deduction to my efforts. Very frustrating.

You can expect the good prizes on the day George Clooney gets down on one knee and begs me to marry him.
