No you don't need to keep any nerds, as far as I understood. To defend you just need to click on the shields that pop-up on top of your castles and houses.

Thanks, Pokelon - just realised you had also asked. It's good that we're getting our heads around this bit by bit.
How do I tell how many nerds I can have at on time ( the maximum)?
Do each of the 3 castles have separate maximum levels or are they all lumped in one total?
I was trying to figure that out. I don't know that you can tell the max until you hit it. You start out at 40. So far, my castle is at level seven or eight and I'm only at 45.
I'm not sure how it works with multiple castles. Mine will both be finished being built in about eight hours. I gues I will find out soon enough!
Castle levels are separate. And I haven't found a way to determine the max nerds before I max out.
When we say one nerd per attack, do we mean one nerd per house and up to five houses attacked or go to a Springfield, attack one house with one nerd and then move to the next Springfield?
Actually, is EA encouraging attacks on random Springfields because we don't know their usage patterns/when they last logged on and defended etc and it makes it harder to guess how long our attack on them will last or how many nerds are needed to destroy a house?
I'm still concerned about Other Springfield. Can you attack the properties in OS for profit or are your nerds wasted? I like this thread. Very informative.
As someone who has no neighbors on this forum I take an opposite view on the strategy. I defend my castle always. ... ... ALWAYS. I need to harvest my nerds to attack other SF's, always using only one nerd for one attack.
At the same time I let all my houses that are attacked be destroyed. I also only attack houses unless I am using a cheater, which I only use on invader castles. Sure this means that strangers are destroying my houses along with my neighbors, but who cares? I am greedy, and it is all about maximizing gold and elixir. SO using Neglecterinos excellent math:
Attack random town 5 times, one castle and 4 houses.
Win: 140+4*70=420 E
50+4*25=150 G
Lose: 10+4*5=30 E
2+4*2=10 G
Attack friend town 5 times, one castle and 4 houses.
Win: 25+4*18=97 E
10+4*8=42 G
Lose: 10+4*5=30 E
2+4*1=6 G
Defending 5 attacks, one castle and 4 houses.
Win: 5*20=100 E
5*10=50 G
Lose: 5*10=50 E
5*5=25 G
So with a friend you can reciprocate with:
Reciprocal win attack/lose defense: (97+50 E, 42+25 G) = (147 E, 67 G)
Reciprocal lose attack/win defense: (30+100 E, 6+50 G) = (130 E, 56 G)
Reciprocal win attack/win defense: (97+100 E,42+50 G) = (197 E, 92 G)
Reciprocal lose attack/lose defense: (30+50 E, 6+25 G) = ( 80 E, 31 G)
So let's say I have 10 possible defenses (I built extra houses around my castle for the event). If I Win them all I get 200 Elixir and 100 gold. If I lose them all I get 100 elixir and 50 gold. Therefore, by allowing myself to lose them all, I only lose 100 elixir and 50 gold.
Then, if the other players have the same strategy as put forth here, with 10 attacks I will get 50 elixir and 20 gold, because obviously I will lose them all. This gives me a total of 250 elixir and 120 gold for 10 attacks and 10 defenses.
However, If I allow all the houses to collapse, and the invader I attack does the same, we will both get 700 elixir and 250 gold just for our attacks. On the defense side, we only get 100 elixir and 50 gold by allowing the houses to collapse before tapping on them. This still gives us a total of 800 elixir and 300 gold for our ten attacks and defenses. Furthermore, if only 2 of the invaders I attack have the same strategy as I do, then I virtually break even on the elixir and come out a little ahead on gold.
So it only takes about 21% of players using this system for it to work, and if everyone were to use it, the results would be even more profitable. I can't speak for everyone else, but I would rather have 800 elixir and 300 gold than 250 and 120.
That is why I am doing my part and letting my houses be destroyed.
You will need a LOT of houses to do this without being skipped by both neighbors and invaders, almost everyone is using one nerd per attack, so you have to leave those houses untappable for others for AT LEAST 9 hours (when you level up your castles your defense goes up, the Other Springfield which is maxed out with 3 castles actually has more than 24 hours for completion). In that timeframe, if you defend quickly, you'll get much more attacks on each building, leading to much more gold in the long run and much more visits from people who will see that your castle is often attackable. Also your strategy relies on the fact that your enemies will let their houses be destroyed, I think that's too unlikely unless you make a deal with your neighbors.

You can attack OS, it won't defend itself. Send one nerd for each of the 3 castles and the remaining two attacks on random houses, you will gain full loot in about 24-26 hours.

Wow for casual players this event is definitely a nightmare. I mean the amount of detail in this is almost beyond me lmao!
Sure you get more by visit random SF BUT!! If you see a neighbor visit you 5 nerts and you visit back with 5 nerds you defend 5 times (sure attack not mutch but your neighbor collect also 5 times!) you have MORE because RANDOM SF dont visit BACK
Think of it, if you make a pack with your neighbors you have way more
I'm in a pretty decent position in the quest line I'm where homer barbarian forces every one to attend lisas recital.
i let my stone castle get destroyed and when i went to rebuild it i got 1 cheater20 i dunno if this was a luck thing or if its always constant but if it is a guaranteed drop i suggest always letting your castle be destroyed and defend everything else, 1 cheater20 is worth the wait
ill get back to you on this once someone attacks my castle again
I'm sticking to the strategy of visiting ransoms with 1 nerd per Springfield. I did read that it pays out more over time or something but even if it doesn't, I'm still going to use it. I'm not bothered if I don't get all the prizes as I got back to school in under 2 weeks so can't play as much.
I also visit other Springfield and send 3 nerds there basically everyday.

Whitin a few moments a have nerts and i visit back
Don't worry I'll keep sending you my nerds....even if you don't want them....gna gna gna But randoms do visit back....you can still revenge your random attacks, so I guess you revisit then, no?
I also got one cheater for rebuilding my castle, let's follow this up indeed. Because I think I also got one for defending at some time, so it does seem kind of random to me
And yes, I confirm Other Springfield is always pay-out, so use 5 nerds there, 3 castles - 2 houses, for 100% gain
I tend to go for the randoms. I choose towns with the characters just wandering around or the ones that have the characters assigned on lengthy assignments.
So I got most of the details about the event, but there's still one little thing that I'm not sure about:
When I tap the castle icon on the bottum of the screen (near the neighbours icon)- the Castle Summary opens.
There I can view info about the state of my castles, levels, num of nerds, elixirs, gold and cheaters I currently have.
but-
I was wondering what's the meaning of the shield on the top right corner of the Castle Summary?
At first I thought it was how many buildings ccan I defend right now from attacks, but that iss incorrect. at least in my town, even when I've swept the city from invaders and cleared it-- still the shield shows the num 1 beside it.

anyone?
That's the cheater shield, if you have cheaters available it will allow you to clear all defences in your town at once. The number 1 means you have one cheater left. :-)

Edit : typos
Sorry but that's not what I meant.
you are reffering to the shield with the dice that is in the top right corner in the game view, but I was talking about a specific menu:
When you open Castle Summary (the castle icon at the buttom) - there is a red dice icon on the left that indicates the number of cheaters I have left.... and there is ALSO a shield, blue and yellow, to the right.
anyone understands what the is the shield's meaning?

Pokelon, would you consider having a FAQ section of your original post? I have some infographics that have already been posted several times.

@NiallMcIlroy : it depends on how many friends you want to benefit from it. I send one nerd to max 2 houses and I will always attack the castle first.
