Archetypes: Good Idea but needs improvement

The Archetypes in UFC 4 are actually a good idea, but they need some minor improvements. ;)

Right now we have 5 basic archetypes
  • Kickboxer
  • Boxer
  • Balanced
  • Wrestler
  • Jiu-Jitsu

And then there are variations under each basic archetypes: for example Kickboxer has Acrobat and Showboat as variations.

Many players have rejected the archetypes. Not because archetypes are a bad idea, they just need a couple of minor changes to realize their true potential!!

First the basic archetypes should be extended to include:
  • Judo
  • Taekwondo
  • Karate
  • Muay Thai

Even though the variations under each archetype might account for some aspects of these, the archetype concept would be much more well received and accepted if the basic archetypes explicitly accounted for all of the basic styles found in professional MMA and UFC matches. So the first step to improve Archetypes is to expand the basic types so that the list is complete. This will just make the CAFs more legitimate.

Second The Archetype variation names should be CHANGED! Instead of names like Acrobat, or Showboat (which don't translate well to MMA imo) Each variation name should be associated with a famous Gym, Academy, Dojo or Martial Art School!

For example under the Jiu Jitsu Archetype instead of Shark and Vanguard we should have names of a Gym or Training Academy, e.g. a Gracie JiuJisu Academy, or Team Nogueira Archetype. Instead of Showboat under kickboxing we could have Jackson-Wink-Academy Archetype or the Xtreme Couture Gym Archetype. That way we have all the basic professional MMA styles and the variations are each associated with a powerhouse training gyms, academy or dojo. Just imagine the Karate Archetype, we could have Cobara Kai Karate :)

If the Archetypes were more complete and the variations more grounded in the sport of MMA more players would appreciate what a good idea they are.

Currently the archetypes are incomplete and the variations with names like showboat, acrobat, razor, vanguard, etc just don't translate well and don't do justice to the archetype concept.

Expand the archetypes to the complete list of basic MMA fighting styles , and then name each variation based on a famous Gym, Training Academy, Dojo, or Martial Arts School. If this is done properly, there would be less of a demand for players to edit their own move lists, although some player would still want to customize. They could be sold on the idea that the Archetypes represent the complete picture.

So an improved Archetype system would have 9 Basic Archetypes:
  • Kickboxer
  • Boxer
  • Balanced
  • Wrestler
  • Jiu-Jitsu
  • Judo
  • Taekwondo
  • Karate
  • Muay Thai

And variation names like Gracie Jui Jitsu, or Couture Karate etc. This would totally make the CAF archetype system legit, more welcome, and more respected.

Thank you for this post, swung this up to the team. Looking to get thoughts from others on the forums here, so replying to bump it.
  • I’d also like to see them open up move set customization. Some archetypes don’t come with elbows in the move sets or even some of what I would consider to be basic kicks.
