This was the case a few years ago. However, if you take no action now after the battle has finished, it will revert to a clean slate.
Once the battle has finished you have a limited time to submit or forfeit the battle. If you do not press one of these 2 buttons in a limited amount of time, the battle will count as a forfeit and all interaction with the battle (bar +1 on the battle counter) is erased.
This is how most players prefer things. It prevents preloading and the need to use 'airplane' mode to prevent preloading. The last thing players want is for progress (when there is little progress) to be uploaded without consent and you're now faced with a preloaded monster.
Sorry, I should have been clearer in my original post. When the battle ended, I was given the option to either Submit or Forfeit, and I pressed Submit.
The exact sequence was:
Before the timer reached 0:00, Taron Malicos had already started his attack. Pirate King Hondo did not die from the first hit. After the timer passed 0:00, Malicos’s second/consecutive attack animation played and killed Hondo. After I pressed Submit, the battle counted as a loss. However, when I entered the second attempt, the full defending team had reset to full health and protection.
Maybe this specific sequence caused the issue: the attack started before 0:00, but the killing blow happened after 0:00. Perhaps the game treated the battle state incorrectly and reset the team instead of saving the submitted timeout result.
