I just noticed my sims doing this. Not only that, when one sim is already in the bed and sleeping on the correct side, (their assigned side) if I send the other to bed they'll first walk around to the wrong side of the bed (occupied side of the bed) before adjusting and walking back around to the other side. It's not an annoying or hard to deal with bug/glitch. Just a curious one.
