If there's one of those bushes your pets can go into (like the ones your Sims can sleep in and "fertilize") they can get bitten by squirrels and that will make them sick. A good tip is to keep a bunch of Wellness treats (the red ones) in your Sim's inventory, so you don't have to go to the vet so often.
