I've had it turned off. My Sims have come back from a vacation only to have Grim take almost all my chickens.
I'm not sure if this is related or not but I also had a lot with a handful of dogs and a few human Sims. Just visited to find all the dogs gone and infants in their place. Couldn't find an urn or anything. I have aging for unplayed households off.
