Dirty dishes going to a sims inventory instead of a counter

My sims never put plates/cups down on a counter after using them. Dirty dishes will always stay in my sims inventory. Its especially an issue when I then leave the home lot or if the food didn't come from the home lot, as I can't just drag them out of their inventory and into a bin/sink.
