Since we can't drag dirty dishes to the sink or trash cans and Sims do clean up after themselves what I been doing is dragging all the plates to the refrigerator and having my sim throw them away that way especially if your Sims are eating in different rooms hope that helps.
There's also a workaround if you connect a trash can to a changing table. Dirty diapers are automatically put in the bin, and Sims can empty those in an outdoor trash can or dumpster.
