The clone stays in the relationship panel — you can call them, invite them over, etc. One time, I tested it and invited them to join the household, and they joined with no issues. It happens whether you've traveled or not, even after several in-game days and lot visits. In my case, it's consistent: it doesn’t matter what you do before or after: it just happens
If you add them to your household, they become permanent so just making sure that's not what you did.
