This is so embarrassing, but it turns out I just needed to update my script mods. I don't know which one was precisely the problem, but these are the mods I updated:

I also removed Carl's double inventory fix, because the problem it was meant to fix was apparently fixed ages ago.
I also re-downloaded Control Any Sim and Roburky's Meaningful Stories, just to make sure.
Roxythefantastic Do note that there are multiple reported issues with Control Any Sim. If you run into other problems, start with deleting it.
Thank you! I also just tested the bug, and it turns out it wasn't mod-related after all. Weirdly enough, it's a sexual orientation problem. Going to post it again in case the workaround helps someone else. I wish I could delete this post. I don't want to clutter the forum by mentioning the same thing twice.
