Sims won't use nearest furniture while eating/reading

I've noticed this a lot more recently, and have found that, even with sims sitting, eating and chatting at the kitchen table (I have a kitchen table literally next to the group meal, and a dining table further away), sims will go to the dining table - I believe because the kitchen chairs are 'comfort: 4' and the dining chairs are 'comfort: 5' but don't quote me on that. Even cancelling the action, they'll continue to the dining table to drop off the meal before I can then redirect them back to the kitchen table to actually talk to their family. Don't get me started on coffee in the morning, that has to go upstairs where the teen is sleeping, rather than the adult already eating breakfast for some reason...
