From my understanding your instinct to uncheck a box if you'd like to opt-out of the targeted advertising is correct.

Removing a checkmark should disable advertising targeted to you, though do keep in mind you'll still see ads with this unchecked -- they just won't be personalized.

The explanations provide a bit of clarification on what happens when those options are disabled (by unchecking the box) though I can definitely see where that confusion stems from with the current phrasing and that binary checkbox. Thanks for the post to highlight that for us!
