Re: Origin Client - Move / Locate Installed Games

Unfortunately I tried this and it didn't work. I did everything you should do; I copied and pasted The Sims 3 and 4 folders to my other hard drive (I didn't cut and paste though, so the original files are still on the C drive), and I changed the download directory to my D drive. I don't think it registered though because my games didn't say to Download, just Play. I tested one of my saved games and it was working as normal (thankfully). Unfortunately when I went to install The Sims 4 Get to Work it failed to install. It worked when I changed the download directory back to the original, and I played it fine, but now my memory is desperately low.

My only other option is to uninstall Origin (and my games if necessary) and then reinstall and redownload all my games onto my other hard drive. Could you please tell me how I can do this safely (if you know what I mean) and take me through it step by step? Can you uninstall and reinstall Origin without having to uninstall the games individually? Please help like you did before, because I really appreciated the quick response to my cry of help. I don't want to mess up my computer because I use it for work as well as games.

P.S. I don't mind if I lose my saved games. I just want to play my games without worrying about lack of memory space.

2016-05.30 Update

I did this to move a game:

1. Make sure that the download directory in your Origin client reflects your desired location (Origin menu - Application Settings - Advanced).
2. Move your game folder from your old location to your new location. (Remember to move [Ctrl+X] and not copy)
3. Start the download for the game and Origin figure out that the game is there.

Notice: I never tried to Copy, so I do not know if that works as well. I did this on Windows 10.

This is 2016. Even smaller companies like GOG have "import folder" option in their BETA version of GOG Galaxy. Instead people have to cut folders and trick their platform to recognize the games.

What is with EA and it's lack of ability to add simplest of modern features?

I just did this in Windows 7 while reinstalling the Mass Effect Trilogy. I chose "c:\games\Mass Effect\Mass Effect" for the first game, but it got installed to "c:\games\Mass Effect\Mass Effect\Mass Effect".

All I did was move the files a directory back and delete the extra \Mass Effect - the origin client was still open, and apparently recognized the change because when I went to click on the box art, it said "Install" instead of "Play", like it did after I'd first installed it.

So, I clicked it, and after a bit of uninterruptible action, it said "Play" again. Clicking "Play" did exactly what it said on the tin; it downloaded my cloud saves, and the game seems to run without any problems.

I tried this and saw the download but didn't want a 12 hour process. If I understand your post, the download sees the program and does not continue. After it completes did it ask for another product code to activate?

@padricmx Hi,

You won't need another code. You won't have to redownload your games either, but you might need to run the respective Touchup.exe file in each game's "__Installer" folder.

Fellow community member Sarge_T wrote a detailed guide about how you can do that using Battlefield 4 as an example.

thanks for the reply. I have printed your suggestion but to be honest, a little more than I am willing to attempt. Not really into CMD line activities. I was hoping for a simple copy/paste operation like was mentioned in the post I replied to.

@EA_Nils I broke down and gave it a try and it appears to have worked. I copied the program Files (86)... files to the D drive, edited the installization log. When offered to download , as soon as the icon appeared on my desktop I canceled the download. Went back to My games and was able to play. My question now is there are many more references  to  "c:Program Files (86)... in the remainder of that install log. Does that make any difference?? Everything seems to be working alright though!

Another issue popped up though. Once I saw that I could "Play" I logged out of Origin. When I tried to login again it wouldn't recogonoze my login. Requested login reset and waited for the email. After about 10 min. I tried contacting support. Every attempt led me to a page wanting a login which of course I didn't have!! Frustrated, I again checked my email and found the reset message. Was able to reset and now can login. My question is...how can I contact support with login questions if I don't have a login????

If you look at the log you can see that the first part of the log references the initial installation on 07/07/2016. The second part of the log references the second installation on 07/15/2016, and it does list the new path that you have chosen now.

thanks Kornwit, worked for me as well. I had 3 games in "Origin Games" on disk D and I was it even worked out just to move Sim City.

Changed download directory in Origin and MOVED the folder with windows.

Win 10 64bit and Origin 9.12.2.60376

So now that there is a new version of Origin, there is no "Advanced" button to select where my files are.  How do you now move your games from One HD to another?

This didn't work for me. Or you need space for the game and the theoretical download to start it. I moved BF1 to a new drive, changed the download directory, but couldn't start the download because I didn't have enough space. So I had to move the entire game back to another drive. Start the download, remove the files and move the entire game again. Took me a good 10-15 minutes, doing something that every * launcher out there can do.

EA, you truly are a meme company. Stop focusing on making Origin look pretty (it does, but it's horrible to use) and give it some basic features.

Well..reading all the text that everyone put down can give a person a depression..

Introducing the new origin with the same flaw but with a new jacket:

Not recognizing the preferences given by the user when choosing download path INSIDE origin advanced options..(<---my problem AGAIN..great games from EA but simple coding for its own program called origin..is abysmal as people and myself have asked year after year since the beginning of origin...''FIX IT please'' ) why do we have to keep asking? are we such bad customers? i mean we do pay EA for games..so we do have the title of customer..or does it spell out ''miscreant'' on our heads?

before you ask..yes i am angry and extremely disappointed in the way EA treats this problem..''leave it to the community'' that is the same as ''oh the customers can search for the answers on their own'' its your programming it is your creation and its your responsibility, we as customers can only point out if there's a problem since the origin is designed for the customers as an easy to use game-holder it was not designed to teach the user how to program and code etc etc.

fix this problem once and for all... this has gone on long enough, i'm not going trough the forums again just to find yet another workaround just to be able to actually USE origin as it was designed..fix the problem.

make the program actually recognize the options given to it, when i select the download folder location to be J instead of its standard C and even after a restart origin still wants to go install on the standard disk C it is not recognizing the options given by the user within the program itself, if it did it would install to the specified location and not the standard location..this problem has been around for a long period with the only fix a complete workaround that does not include the use of the internal options of origin..the problem is consistent and has never been fixed.
