Crazy Screen tear AMD Free sync. Persists through all load and in game

Product: Apex Legends
Platform:PC
Please specify your platform model. PC
AMD or Nvidia Model Number AMD RX580 MSI
Enter RAM memory size in GB 8GB
What is your gamertag/PSN ID/EA Account name? EzElliott
Please provide your squad mates' gamertag/PSN ID/EA Account name if possible.
Are you using any software with an overlay? No
Which Legend were you playing (if applicable)?
Which Legends were your squad mates using (if applicable)?
Where did the issue occur? In the lobby (waiting area before the match)
Which part of the map or menu were you in? If you don't remember the exact name, please describe the area or what you were trying to do in the menu. It occurs everyone seemingly. But water and boxes seem to cause it the most
What were you doing when the issue occurred? E.g. respawning a squad mate at a beacon, using an ability, a squad mate left the game. Everything? Once it starts it shows up on all the menus'. Its fine for the first 10-15 min but then these crazy lines show up.
Did your squad mates also experience the issue? No
How many matches had you played in a row before the issue occurred? 1
When did this happen? (dd.mm.yy hh:mm)
How often does the bug occur? Often (50% - 99%)
How severe is your issue? Major impacts to gameplay
What happens when the bug occurs? Just playing the game normally. Then crazy bright lights appear on some objects. Then the screen starts to tear. Then the tears persist through all the menues
What should be happening instead? Ideally crazy lights on boxs and other objects won't appear and I wont get crazy tears on objects and in the main menue.
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Run an MSI RX580 on windows and I'm sure you will have the issue. I have been through a couple of monitors and still having the same issue. Games like SQUAD or Star Wars Squadrons have no issues.

Has anyone seen this before and does anyone know how to correct it?

  • I FINALLY FOUND THE ISSUE!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

So after changing up the hardware and trying out different video cards and monitors I finally found the issue.

The issue was the GamingOSD software that came with my MSI monitor. For whatever reason that software was making my Apex games crash. Also, this could explain my VR games never had any issue.

So just an FYI, don't use the GamingOSD software from MSI. #MissionAccomplished

    Hey @EzElliott

Based on what you described this sounds like graphical artifacting. Have you been keeping an eye on your temperatures while Apex Legends is running?

    /Kent

  • Hey Kent!

I have. My video card runs anywhere from 50-70C. I have the Fan speed set to 100% all the time to keep them down. What temperatures should I be looking for? Should I take more screenshots? Certain objects in the game will turn crazy colors while other objects look fine. Do you think there could be something wrong with my video card?

It is odd I don't have any issues in other games. I play mostly on Xbox but have been trying to get more into PC lately. I have 40-50 hours in squadrons and I can play that on max with no issues. Sometimes I play squadrons in VR which really taxes my system and I have never had in issue like this. So I assumed it was an apex only issue.

I am running the Steam Client version of the game. Could that be the issue?

Thanks, it sounds like there are either driver errors or hardware failures at play here. Fortunately the former is far more likely, and easier to fix.

The best next step is a clean reinstall of your GPU drivers. Corrupted drivers can sit and persist through updates, so a clean reinstall is the way to go.

  • I uninstalled all my drivers and the AMD software. Still getting the exact same issue. If it were a hardware issue, shouldn't I be getting issues in other games? I'm sure running VR games would break just as badly if not worse right?

I only experience issues with Apex Legends. Is there anyone that works at Apex that can help me out? I really want to dive into the PC version of the game. I got platinum 3 seasons in a row on Xbox but want to get good at keyboard and mouse.

Can anyone help me? I can provide more screenshots if that helps. It is really easy to reproduce the issues.

    @EzElliott

Thanks for following up! I'm glad to hear you were able to figure out what was happening. I appreciate you sharing this.

    /Kent

  • So, I still am getting a few crashes without the gaming OSD installed but it takes way longer now. I am not seeing the crazy colors on specific objects anymore so maybe there is another different issue? I did some testing and I gamed on my old acer monitor for about 4 hours without a crash with the EXACT same hardware. So that narrows it down to the monitor for sure. Its strange though. I was able to do 3-4 hours on Warzone with 0 issues on the MSI monitor @ 1440P and 144Hz.

So for whatever reason, Apex does not like my MSI MAG27CQR Monitor. Maybe Apex doesn't like to game above 60 Hz? I'm not going to buy a new monitor just to play apex.

So please let me know if Apex ever starts supporting this monitor or 1440P at 144hz and I'll start playing again. I guess I'll just be on Warzone for now.

Good luck to anyone with this monitor.
