Letterboxing on 4:3 aspect ratio monitor

Product: Apex Legends
Platform:PC
Please specify your platform model. PC
AMD or Nvidia Model Number GTX 1080
Enter RAM memory size in GB 16GB
What is your gamertag/PSN ID/EA Account name? ShearersHedge
Please provide your squad mates' gamertag/PSN ID/EA Account name if possible.
Which Legend were you playing (if applicable)?
Which Legends were your squad mates using (if applicable)?
Where did the issue occur? In a match
Which part of the map or menu were you in? If you don't remember the exact name, please describe the area or what you were trying to do in the menu. Game-wide issue
What were you doing when the issue occurred? E.g. respawning a squad mate at a beacon, using an ability, a squad mate left the game. Playing
Did your squad mates also experience the issue? I don't know
How many matches had you played in a row before the issue occurred? 0
When did this happen? (dd.mm.yy hh:mm)
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
How severe is your issue? Major impacts to gameplay
What happens when the bug occurs? I get a 16:10 letterboxed image on my 4:3 monitor.
What should be happening instead? I should have a fullscreen image at 4:3 aspect ratio
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Try to play at a 4:3 aspect ratio

Respawn titles are the only PC shooters I know of that don't support 4:3 screens. It would be greatly appreciated if you could remove the letterboxing on our more narrow aspect ratios. This game looks amazing at high refresh rates but it's a bummer to have a restricted view on my CRT monitor.

Just FYI, CRT monitors will be around for years to come because there are plenty of DAC's that support high refresh rates and resolutions, and online communities that are keeping CRT's alive with knowledge on maintenance and calibration. So it would be cool if you could make your HUD flexible enough to allow them. Besides, you never know if somebody's running a weird multi-monitor setup that is more narrow than 16:10.

What happens when the bug occurs? The aspect ratio remains widescreen ratio on a 4:3 screen showing the black boarders at the top and bottom
What should be happening instead? The game screen should cover the whole display with no black boarders
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Change the aspect ratio to 4:3

Users with 4:3 displays need correct scaling in order to utilise the screen space.

No user fix is availible even after changing ratio, resolution and scaling settings in Nvidia control panel.

Where did you get a 4:3 aspect monitor anyways?  They haven't made those in a couple years. At least not for art/gaming.  Mostly industry and medical desks and kiosks.  Honestly I woudln't expect them to add it.  Much like the 1920x1280 aspect ratio is dead, so is 4:3

Seems there's a lot of really outdated hardware on this forum griping about support.  Fact is they aren't going to as its not worth the money.  Why keep a 1990 caddy running if you can just buy a new 2019.  Same difference.  No money in supporting old hardware.  It's not an answer but its the truth of it all.  If it was my game and I saw it come up I'd laugh and move on.  That 4:3 has less of a viewing angle then the game even supports.  i think it would be 40* of view vs the games limit of 70*.

  • I can emulate 4:3 through nvidia settings.

I was trying to help someone out and found it out to be a bug with the game.

Thanks man, that worked great! Works in Titanfall 2 as well. And you Don,t have to switch to 16:9, just any other res. Or just alt+enter and back again.

But this is a bit of a sloppy workaround, we need a permanent, non-hacky fix from Respawn
