Very bad frametime on RX 7900XTX

Product: Apex Legends
Platform:PC
Please specify your platform model. PC
AMD or Nvidia Model Number AMD RX 7900XTX (R5 5700X CPU)
Enter RAM memory size in GB 32
What is your gamertag/PSN ID/EA Account name? ZephyrArcturusOf
Please provide your squad mates' gamertag/PSN ID/EA Account name if possible.
Are you using any software with an overlay? Yes
If yes, can you list them here? AMD Radeon Center, steam
If you disable this software, does that have any effect? No
Which Legend were you playing (if applicable)?
Which Legends were your squad mates using (if applicable)?
Where did the issue occur? In a match
Which part of the map or menu were you in? If you don't remember the exact name, please describe the area or what you were trying to do in the menu. Everywhere in the game (menu, shooting range, in games etc...)
What were you doing when the issue occurred? E.g. respawning a squad mate at a beacon, using an ability, a squad mate left the game. Always happening
Did your squad mates also experience the issue? No
How many matches had you played in a row before the issue occurred? 0
When did this happen? (dd.mm.yy hh:mm)
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
How severe is your issue? Major impacts to gameplay
What happens when the bug occurs? The game will stutter constantly during gameplay and in the menu, using a frametime tool it seems that every 3 or 4 frame one frame takes much longer than the others to generate. The game also reports a framerate much higher than what is read by both steam and the AMD driver software.
What should be happening instead? The game should run smoothly
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Only been able to reproduce the problem on my machine

I tried reinstalling the game, the driver, deleting shader cache, launching with +fps_max, playing without any other software open etc...
I tried with and without Vsync and freesync.
I tried driver versions 24.7.1, 24.8.1 and 24.9.1

I tried with low and high settings

The issue seems to have started a couple weeks ago after a game update, it was working fine in july, august and early september.
The game ran fine when the "Shockwave" update initially released.

Here is a screenshot inside the shooting range, game is reporting 238fps, driver is showing around 130 with big spikes in frametime.

  • Are you running the game in DX11 or DX12? (if you don't know what I'm asking then it's DX11)

If you're running the game in DX11, I'd suggest to give DX12 a try (you'll very likely get a performance boost!) Guide is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/apexlegends/comments/16mwzaz/dev_team_update_directx_12_rhi/

I'd also suggest running "sfc /scannow" as administrator in the windows command line (search for "cmd" -> right click -> "run as administrator" -> paste the command). This will check and fix corrupt system files. Usually this is enough to fix framerate/framepacing or network related issues in Apex

  • Hi there.
Forgot to add it in my original message but i have the same problem wether i use DX11 or DX12, i'm getting a somewhat better framerate on DX12 (still with huge stuttering).

The screenshot above was taken with DX12.
Tried doing sfc scannow to no effect.

I think the problem started to appear shortly after they added DX12 as a launch option (instead of having to add a custom param)
