I think secure boot will kill BF6, do you agree?

I do want to state that I really want this game to do well.  This was going to be the next staple game in my library that I played for a long time if it delivers like the reviews have said.   However, there is something pretty significant that will prevent me from purchasing it so I wanted to share that reasoning.  I am also curious how many others felt the same way?  I am hoping the comments on the thread will show EA how many people they are really leaving out of the picture.  Or perhaps show me that maybe nobody cares?

There is only one reason, and I mean only one reason why I will not buy this game and that is secure boot.  I literally cannot play it.  I've tried some work arounds, its exhausting to figure out on my PC, and I am done trying.  I do not have some cheap computer.  I do not see this as a small problem.  I see increasing numbers of players posting comments on videos that say they have given up and turned away already or that they will not even try it.  If EA wants to get to the player base they claim to want, this will 100% prevent that in my opinion.  Keep in mind, I cannot even play the free battle royale on release if it requires this.

Why is this NOT a small problem even if the change is made at launch and not fixed now?

I was one of those players hyped for 2042.  I don't need to go over the issues, but it came out with many.  I turned a blind eye to it on release and took a VERY long time to look back at it.  Maybe 6-8 months.  When I did, even with some fixes, I started to nit pick, I had started other games and my interest was not focused on it anymore.  Another while down the road, see it on sale for $5 eventually, even then, no interest at that point.  Gamers do not give as many chances anymore.

I completely understand this is a Beta and not the full release.  However, this absolutely KILLS hype.    The momentum for me wanting to buy this game was now, which instantly dropped by 50% today the moment I realized I could not play even the free beta because of secure boot.  All of my friends I was trying to get to order it or play it with me tonight I now have to say, sorry, we can't play it (they don't want to mess with their BIOS).  That was 5 people in total that are now out.  So it is not just one person, it is all of their friends that they would have promoted the game to.  I personally buy games for my friends and family on many occasions and I can't/won't even do that now.

I know a lot of people will try to work around this to play and it will be fine.  However, if BF6 launches with it, I'm out and everyone I know is out.  I cannot imagine we are among the few.  I think it will be way more people than everyone thinks.  I'm already starting to move on in my head to be honest.  I'm already looking at the next game as well as my friends.  As a die hard BF fan that really wants to come back after skipping the last release due to initial issues, I sincerely hope EA takes this as a serious issue regarding blocking out players and lifts the secure boot requirement.

If your computer is prebuilt, generally secure boot is enabled by default. If you're afraid of messing around in BIOS, why are you building a custom computer?

Also, you literally can play it. Just follow a guide and enable secure boot. EZ

Tell me your motherboard and upload a screenshot from msinfo32 so we can see if you have Legacy or UEFI. I can help you enable Secure Boot. If I were at your house, you'd have it turned on in a minute. I'll help you; it's trivial. Let's go through it together step by step, okay? It's really not hard at all. It's simple, it's trivial.

  • While My PC cant even run this game because of secure boot, i absolutely loathe cheaters to the point i have them in the same category as Killers R*pists and PDF's, im honestly not even against just playing on a console if it means the anti cheat works

Dude, I feel the same way. I've had experience with them from BFV, and you have no idea how pissed I am when one piece of trash kills the game on an entire server. I'd hunt them down and throw them in jail for 1-2 years, maybe not like murderers for 20 or life, but as I said, 1-2 years for sure.

All of my friends who want to play have gone out of their way to turn on Secure Boot and upgrade to Win11. I really want BF6 to succeed, so hopefully this trend continues well into release.

    **bleep** cheaters.

  • It is weird that people in this time and age, especially pc gamers who were always regarded as tech savy do not know how to turn on secure boot. I mean I was kid, early 2000s in my 10s when I was messing around bios trying to make my cheap 512 mb ram rig run as fast as possible. I mean If you don't know and want to mess around bios, then consoles are for you, just plug and play. Now if you are a cheater that is another thing.

Gonna be missing out on a lot of games in the future then, over a simple toggle in BIOS. It's one of, if not the easiest thing to change in bios nowadays. Unless your pc is 10 years old, that is (in which case - it wouldnt run BF6 very well anyway, and it's **bleep** well optimized.)

But, anti-cheat doesn't work on consoles either... So, there is that. CoD has already proven that.

First, NO F-ing company -NEEDS- to have kernel level access to my PC.

    2) Secure Boot truly wasn't made for the average consumer to use. It was made for people in sensitive tech and data jobs to keep their sensitive systems more secure.

    3) All these data breaches that occur with literally every friggin tech, data, and telecom company is another reason as to why EA/DICE and Activision does not need access to my computer.
