ERS Deploy During Quali
Why is it that during qualifying, I have to change my ERS via the MFD menu, but during the race, ERS is done simply with the push of a button? Is it possible to have push button deploy in quali? Very...
@Monzstar83 You sure you're looking at the MGU-K deployment gauge and not the ES gauge?
I'm not a fan of this year's HUD as it makes this info harder to see. But notice how the yellow bar at the center is your ES, your whole ERS battery. I had a number from a proper source somewhere but can't find it right now, but you can bet that the ES can hold significantly more than 4MJ. So you will never go from 100% to zero in a single lap as that would require dumping way more than 4MJ.
The MGU-K deployment cap (4MJ) is represented by the green outline on the throttle gauge on the right. It will always start the lap (any lap) full and empty as you go about the track. This one should, indeed, zero out or get close to zero as you wrap a lap on Hotlap mode.
The MGU-K harvest cap (2MJ) is represented by the red outline on the brake gauge on the left. Again, it will always start the lap empty – it's a harvesting cap, not deployment after all.
Taking this qualifying session from Marcel in Bahrain, for instance. Top pic is when he's approaching the final corner on his outlap, about to switch the ERS to Hotlap map. Bottom pic is him at the end of his hotlap, having drained most of the MGU-K 4MJ cap, and the last one is when he's about to cross the S/F line – when the caps get restored back to full.

So then is there any reason to turn off the ERS deploy during qualifying?
I always thought ERS was just the Yellow bar in the middle. I didn’t know there was a deploy cap (green) that resets every lap.
Does the yellow bar mean anything during quali?
What I do is as soon as I pull out of the pits, I turn off ERS deploy for my outlap because I don’t want to waste ERS. As I come into my flying lap, I turn it back on, but sometimes that means trying to turn it on in the middle of a turn or chicane which is kind of troublesome. What’s the easiest/best approach here?
From what you’re saying, it sounds like I should just forget the yellow bar and leave ERS on Hotlap since it resets every lap.
So I guess my initial feedback still stands. Since there’s only two modes in qualifying, None or Hotlap, I wish it was as simple as pressing the overtake button to switch between the two.

You can bind a button for ERS modes since... Haha I actually don't even remember playing a F1 game where you couldn't 😂
It's in the settings. Scroll down on the key bindings section.
I always had buttons mapped to ERS, brake bias, and differential on my controller. Dropped ERS after F1 2020 or 2021 because didn't find it a hassle to go through the MFD after the ERS was simplified.

Sometimes a hot lap doesn't go as planned, we find traffic, we miss a turn, hit a curb etc... I turn ERS off, recharge battery, to open a new hot lap with a full battery.
In my league races, I switch my ERS off coming out of the pits. Go to Hotlap before starting your timed lap. and when I cross the line I switch ERS off and drive the cool down lap with my brake pedal at about 10%. this charges your ERS back up pretty quickly and lets you do another HotLap without having to go back to the pits.
