Head to Head ranking points

After completing a h2h game, an alert pops up and says you've earned 50 rp for completing a game. What does this mean/do? I haven't won game online yet so why would I be getting rp towards the leaderboard when I haven't won yet? And I notice no change to my rp in the one single player mode.
