I set up my team in the franchise mode, and then created a player and assigned him to the same team, but in that mode, it doesn't appear on the roster at all. I didn't figure that out yet in this one. Do I need to make it a free agent and sign him to the team that way?
Sounds like you started your franchise with a roster file that didn't include your created player considering you made the player after the franchise was already created.
Create player, make all roster adjustments, save roster, then start your franchise.
Also, search the shared rosters section, someone might have posted updated rosters for the current NHL season. Download that first and save before you create players or teams so they all save on same file.
