It uses the strats and tactics of the head coach of your team. You can change yourself while on the fly in game, not at main menu.
Some like the variable that it brings, some don't. IRL GMs hire coaches for their skill/pedigree and philosophy/strats in hope that it will gel with the roster they provide them.
