I had a thought the other night that explains so much of what's wrong with goalies in NHL 24. I'm also completely certain this isn't actually the case. So just for fun here it is: The devs have modelled the goalie behaviour based on late 80s/early 90s goaltending. The butterfly exists but hasn't quite become the dominate style and there are still lots of goalies playing an in-between style where they're still trying to make a lot of unnecessary, flashy, reactionary saves where just being in the right position would suffice. Think Richter or Vernon from this time period.
Here the shooter is too close to the goalie and has positioned the puck in such a way that his only play is to shovel a shot right at the goalie. And that's exactly what he does. Easy save right? No, the goalie feels the need to do the splits and attempt a lunging blocker save opening up lots of holes for the puck to go through. And it does.
Again, the shooter is in close with no real holes to shoot at. The goalie should be relying on positioning to make the save and forcing the shooter to make a more difficult shot to score. And again the goalie can't just let the shot hit him, he needs to make an unnecessary kick-save attempt opening up holes for the puck.
Here again the goalie has most of the net covered and I should be forced to make a really good backhand shot to get the puck past him near the post. My shot is terrible and goes right at the goalie, but because an unnecessary animation is triggered I get rewarded with a goal.
And finally the Mike Richter special. There is absolutely no reason this animation should kick in here. I'm not saying it's a good idea to give up this shot, but there's no pass to worry about and the goalie is positioned in a way that there's little to shoot at. Just standing there would have been a better option. Edit: there's two goals in this clip. Only the first one is of interest here.
