Goalies are beyond terrible and more great feedback

I'd like to preface this by saying I've played hockey for almost 40 years and most of it as a goalie. I've been a player, coach and fan my entire life. Goalies in this game do so many things that make absolutely no sense. They dive when they shouldn't, they don't move laterally like a goalie should, they can't poke check cross-crease passes an inch in front of them, they bobble the puck and put it in their own net like like they're playing with stubs for limbs instead of sophisticated modern equipment. They make ridiculous passes that no one calls for and pad stacks on a standard slow one-timer. It's absolute insanity as a goaltender. Also on a personal note, I like my goalies to have higher than a .550 when we're three and a half series in without a loss.

Honestly, it sort of feels like this entire game was designed by someone who has watched hockey but not actually ever played it; there's no flow in the gameplay and game-breaking immersion is constantly happening; players do things (pass and shots choices, etc.) that would never happen in real life. The "culture" they have in this game is straight out of a "Letterkenny" skit. Players don't celebrate like that. People don't stand on the line and act like that pre-game. Players and play by play don't speak like that. I've been at the rink since I was three years old and after 37 years of playing and coaching this feels like parody of actual hockey culture.

It looks like a hockey game, but it has no soul.

@Fadetoblack021 Agreed, at the beginning the goalkeepers are great then the 1 patch the players cry and the goalkeepers are full of holes.
They play what they're supposed to have so you lose the games.

CPU defenseman shooting the puck in the net off the back of their own goalie's head because they don't know how to pass along the boards shouldn't really be a thing either. In our last game the other team called for the puck from diagonally behind the net and the goalie just tosses the puck right in the net. Imagine a goalie turning around in an NHL game and just...throwing the puck into the goal.

The game is full of little things like that which would never happen in hockey. The excuse of "well he called from the wrong spot" shouldn't even be any sort of issue because not a single goalie in history would just...toss the puck in their own net. Imagine playing 2k where Lebron just throws the ball into the stands every few seconds and they just said "well you're not pressing the right passing direction!". They're literally blaming users for passes, shots and gameplay which should never be programmed into the game in the first place.

  • Wholeheartedly agree with this! Nailed it on the head. I myself played hockey since I was 9 years old and being 32 I still play the game. I grew up around a hockey family who played from Junior to Pro levels. Why call this game NHL when it has further directed itself away from the simulation gameplay? GWC is gonna be a disaster again due the poorly made product we call NHL 24 and it's very unprofessional given the NHL is sponsoring this tournament.

Goalies are brutal, especially when the pressure system is abused and they flop all over the place. I know Mike means well, but man this isn't a good start with the new dev team. They need communication like was promised. Backpedalling is gonna cause more fire and consumers are going to lose interest.

Welcome to Fortnite on ice. World of Chel should go back to a more professional depiction of what nhl hockey is and drop the fortnite gimmick presentation and gear. For the love of God get rid of outdoor drop in games that look awful and have had the same graphic glitch for over 3 years and put us back in an arena already.

Having been around NHLers (and play with some retired ones in men's league now) myself as well they couldn't be any more different then they're being portrayed in these latest series of games. Of course you have outliers but most are nice, professional people who dress well, speak very politely and understand they're representing not only their themselves but the corporate image of the NHL.

Hockey players largely also play by a code where they don't show off that much or it would very quickly become an issue. Remember when Ovi pretended to put his "hot stick" out and the outrage it caused at the time? That was in 2009 and if one of the most famous players in history learned that he can't do it why would a team making an NHL game it's normal to do on every goal? Why would they create and market a game and all their DLC around a culture that has never existed outside of hockey parodies? Who did they advising them that said hockey players act like this? It's just so...unbelievably wrong and that's just the presentation side.

On ice? Here's a short list.

    - Players will randomly pass and shoot to nowhere half a dozen times a game with passes that don't make sense and would never occur in real life

    - Goalies don't play like that, it's an elegant and precise position with ~10k worth of modern gear

    - CPU cannot cycle, pass using the boards, scores on itself, doesn't understand that a net exists when skating or passing

    - Defense can't proficiently skate backwards for some reason, if you skate you'll understand what I mean

    - Catching a slap shot or dump from 1 foot away breaks your hand into 10,000 pieces since there's no pad in the palm of your glove

    - The odds of you intercepting a pass that's outside of your field of view on your stick is about 0.01 percent not 99

    - Every player on every play will try to defensively lift your stick. That's literally how you play defense. The idea you'd slash someone on the hands instead of just...miss if you're out of position is bonkers. Absolutely bonkers.

    - There's been something like 4 Michigan goals in the history of the NHL. It was founded in 1917.

This game feels as though it was hockey directed by Michael Bay. If you were around for TMNT or the original Transformers you'll also get that reference.

Best way I can describe it is the people who make this game only watch all star games and try to mimic that and call it hockey.

Ive been around hockey my whole life(39 years), been playing NHL games as well since blades of steel on NES.  Agree with all you said.  It seems like they care more about HUT(it makes them money so i get it) than anything else.  They also focus on adding goofy pregame animations, goal celebrations, goal emotes, etc vs game play.  Im cool with the goal celebrations because they happen to an extent, guys talk smack so the emotes are ok… but they should focus on fixing the gameplay above all else.  Once you get the gameplay working correctly leave it alone and work on cosmetic stuff. Crazy to think this is NHL but goalies are passing in their own net, cpu dman take off behind their net every time they get the puck and they pass into the goalie of off the net.

They need to leave all that “arcade” stuff to a 3v3 mode and chel needs to be about gameplay. I dont play HUT but i cant imagine guys that do want or care about all the flipping and pushups on the pregame intros?

@booher04 where they don't care about the mill, they care more about making as much money as possible.

Pregame intros like that aren't even a thing. They're announced while they skate out and they just stand on the blue line during the anthem. I don't even know where they got that idea from, honestly. I agree with celebrating goals like they do normally but if someone scores in the NHL then they skate to the middle of the ice and do some spinning clock celebration then there'd be a bench clearing riot.
