@EA_Aljo wrote:I agree. I preferred the changes to hitting, but obviously much of the community did not feel the same. I'll say it once again, we get requests for the game to be less arcade and then get complaints when that happens.Sorry @EA_Aljo, but this is a gross oversimplification and highly misleading. You omitted the part where EA intentionally nerfed already clunky defensive stick mechanics in an arcade way in order to aid arcade offensive puck possession. We know this to be true because poke check and DSS did not used to be this slow and penalized (speed penalties and actual penalties). As has been stated multiple times in the last couple years, it is absurdly arcade to give a player carrying the puck more ability and agility with his stick than the player without the puck. You compound that when you also allow that puck-carrying player the arcade ability to rather easily shed body and stick contact with no or little impact to maintaining/quickly regaining possession. As a result, puck possession in this game nowhere near resembles the NHL (and neither does defensive stick use/abilities). I personally have made numerous requests for the game to be more "sim" in this regard. So to characterize the revert as “less arcade” without acknowledging the overall context or balance issues created by the devs decisions towards offensive arcade in the first place is an irresponsible message to send to the community in my view.
I didn't omit anything. This is just my personal opinion from being on these forums since well before I even worked here. When we make something more difficult and widen the skill gap, we get a lot of negative feedback. Poke checks causing too many penalties, having pre-made builds and making hitting less affective are a few examples. These were all very negatively received and ended up being changed.
I think we have a good balance now of pokes not causing too many penalties, but I'm very much not a fan of the slow down from it. I'm also not claiming that the game doesn't have arcade elements. I'd surely like to see those reduced as well. It would be good to see the carrier not have as high a success rate with picking up the puck after contact. I'd rather the puck be dislodged more so the defender has a better chance of gaining control. Defense could use a boost in general. At the same time though, it's a position that takes skill to play well. Good defenders are going to be able to defend against the puck carrier. Whether that's poke checks, hits or just good positional play, it all takes skill to succeed at. Yes. It's a challenge. Maybe too much. I'd certainly like it if that were balanced better without making either side overpowered.
My own personal sentiment is very similar to how most of you feel. I want a game that leans sim, but not completely. That would be a lot more frustrating than fun. However, not everyone has the same definition of fun. There are those here that say the game is ruined because they don't like the hitting mechanics. I like the changes to skill stick for hitting and prefer that over 23. I'm just not a fan of the Total Control method of hitting and one button controls in general. It feels more natural to "wind up" for the hit. This is just an example of how fun isn't the same for everyone.
You're doing terrific at these logical fallacies.. please tell me how making hits less effective "widens the skill gap" this ought to be good!
Everyone is fine with defense being hard... but that's if offense is hard too 🤣 the lacrosse is one button. Meanwhile on defense we gotta aim our pokecheck and sweep the stick correctly but if at the wrong time the puck goes through our legs and if we're near the goalie it will bounce off our skate and score a goal 🤡
"I want a game that leans sim, but not completely." And THIS is the biggest issue in NHL because the "not completely" is ALWAYS to the detriment of defense and to boost the offense. THIS closes the skill gap and adds randomness and stupid goals like a puck going off a defenders skate (that was otherwise in a good position to defend a cross crease pass) your "widening the skill gap" is just boosting the offense. It doesn't do that at all lmao. This is the biggest advantage the offense has EVER had over the defense since I started playing this game and it's GOTTA be the smallest I've ever seen the skill gap.
You claimed Poke check was okay in another thread.
i think you might just be at the wrong end of that “small skill gap” and rather than take the advice here on how to get better, you’re busy implying the people who make this game are clowns.
lets play an OVP game if you’re up for it. I want to see if you have a good understanding of how to play defence in this game.
I have already said I only play WoC countless times.. I'm not sure how your memory is.. you can check my WoC stats.. I'm doing quite fine, it's just not fun. I also have videos and I've streamed. It all shows I know what I'm doing.. you on the other hand probably use every game breaking mechanic given to you judging by your NEED for offensive superiority.

I’m actually a mostly exclusive D in woc too, so I don’t have a need to use game breaking mechanics.
Most of my feedback is largely based around defending, using DSS, etc. I love the added responsibilities on D because the payoffs are larger.
Some of those payoffs come by way of shutting down the typical go-to plays by the higher skilled.
Some of the changes to the mechanics aren’t always about black/white possession of the puck - sometimes it’s about adding the ability to create new scenarios and then sorting out the meta within those movements.
For example, the removal of the speed burst in hitting would force the D to time their decision-making differently. It should’ve also enticed the use of the shove more, and also encouraged more use of DSS - creating different scenarios defensively and forcing the offensive to try different things in the face of new defensive setups.
But instead, because a few can’t master the changes within a few days and take some L’s against those who are adapting, we get “outcry” on social media, forums etc
You also didn't clarify if you thought poke checking was in a good place or not.

And that was my problem with it was the fact that we didn't even give it a chance for people to adapt to a different style of play and what not. That all being said I do understand why they did it and the reason it was implemented so fast was because at the top level it brought back the unwanted puck ragging meta that existed in 23 that the Pressure System was supposed to fix from happening. Got a message relayed from Inglehart about it who supposedly said when they saw the All Star Event, it brought back the ragging meta that they didn't want in the game, so they chose to revert it for now and maybe try in the future to better tackle the removal of acceleration when hitting problem. I cannot directly confirm this but that was what was told to me.
I still think many of the responses from those that played WoC exclusively were just gripes of having to learn how to hit all over again and the fact that harder for defense again and not offense. But from a 1v1 perspective, I can totally see how the system that was in there for a few days made it very likely to entice stalling tactics of the puck like we saw with the Eki clip.

I was working with the NHL during the All Star event. I was at Scotiabank mostly but when I switched over to the Fan Fair I would see the fans frustrated at the Playstation booth. At the end of the night the games left on the menu were a racing game and some jungle game.

This doesn't mean anything. Why would people spend their time in front of a console they have at home, standing at an uncomfortable kiosk playing against the CPU or an opponent where one person needs to play going down, when they could be doing this?

I play this game almost daily, and if I were at this event, I wouldn't go near the NHL 24 kiosk. Not because the game is bad or too hard but because I'd be there to experience the Fan Zone and all of the real-world hockey experiences.

Different times. In our time maybe but this generation 3/4 are glued to their phones. I went to my cousin's for the Superbowl and my little cousins were downstairs playing Spiderman on PlayStation.
For the most part parents waited in lines while the kids roamed around and the PlayStation booth was near the food area. Plus the NHL players left around 4. Big names around 2. Either way when they get to the booth they shouldn't be struggling and frustrated to play.
Those pictures are of the street hockey tournament which they had breaks in between.

You think majority people attending the NHL All Star fan fair are not going to be familiar with the game NHL lol. Emphasis on the N H L part.
Apparently to you the Amish only attended.

My father hasn't played since NHL 2001 (even then I whopped his butt like 24-0), so I have no doubt he wouldn't know what to do if he went to the kiosk. My 6yo nephew plays NHL 17 with '94 controls, I'm sure he would get pretty frustrated playing '24 too.
These aren't meant for NHL: The videogame ™ hardcores (lol why would someone used to thr game wanna play it in public?) - they're meant for general hockey fans to experience something new. That all said, I definitely agree the controls should be even just slightly easier for green players to pick up.

Why @EA_Aljo u have to ruin this game whit the arcade hitting? That speed boost is so stupid and bad. I have played this nhl games for years and i know how to play this game but the point is this is not fun. So So arcade and no one is enjoying this. I have talk about this for many people and they all say the same. Pressure system was good fix when u took that douwn but the hitting needs to be fix please. No More acceleration /speed boost.

Do me a favor - quote me where I said "A majority (of) people attending the NHL All Star fan fair are not going to be familiar with the game"

Exactly. Provide simple one-button pass/shoot/hit mechanics for the layperson while still providing advanced controls.
I'd also suggest eliminating the on-ice trainer entirely by default. Let people turn it on if they need assistance. In my experience with new players, the distraction from the on-ice trainer barking instructions and such contributes to confusion over the controls.

We removed the speed boost, but the community was very upset about it. So, it seems there are a lot of people enjoying this.

If this is true, than I really don't want to know what next game will look like :D There are lot of people who are upset with this hitting nonsense ..
Maybe there is no need to remove speedbost completely. After january tuner the gameplay was just fine even with speedboost. So maybe some balance?
Also as I mentioned earlier in online play total controls players are in obvious advance with this speedboost compared to skill stick players now. So maybe some fair play?
Last patch just messed up whole game (goalies sucks more, more glitch moves and goals ...).

Community is 50/50 about this hitting so can u please balanced this hitting? There shouldn't be a speed up or slow down to the hitting mechanics in general. NHL 23 hitting was fine if they toned it down a bit. We these mechanics I don't think there is a fix. Who knows maybe they can find a balance. This game would be great if it had 23 hitting.
I liked the slower gameplay with the tuner that killed hitting, I think they should have tried an aim assist to it before reversing it and if that didn't work just chalk it up and reverse it back.
- Treatmentworke662 years agoSeasoned Ace
I use more reverse hitting than regular hitting, for one ,and I'm not a button guy and two I found that hitting this year puts you out of position more than it should when using skill stick ,just MY Opinion
This guy all he did was run my players and he only got one penalty and was for tripping

@phomi99@EA_Aljoyes in nhl 23 hitting was fine. But now hitting is too much and un realisticIt's terrible animations and very ugly to watch. It's like some invisible push they are attempting. And sometimes you clip a leg with the awful timing mechanic and the player goes flying or other times you line up a guy perfectly only for him to skate right by you lol.
They basically took away the satisfaction of lining up a nice hit. People just skate straight at you because it's a 50/50 chance the hit works. Beginning of the game was too overpowered but it forced players to cut and be more cautious entering the zone.

Yes the hitting animation is a big joke . It looks and feels very stupid and unrealistic
