They didn't though. They made some fundamental changes to the control scheme to make the game more accessible and also to add a refreshing hitting mechanism that is far more realistic than just holding UP on RS and waiting for the game to assist you in making a hit.
Most of the "people who don't want to play anymore" because of those changes are doing themselves a disservice by not taking the time to adapt to the new controls and mechanisms. They're not perfect, but they're also not broken.

Not necessarily. Although you're very experienced and I don't doubt your knowledge of the sport itself, being able to make decisions surrounding the translation of that sport into 1's and 0's playable with a controller requires a whole team of people with vast levels of experience.
