Also here's some examples with an 83 hitting build with lockdown perk on hitting:

In those situations that kidshowtime wants others to hit, this is the result a lot of times.
So it's very easy to understand why people go for pokes here. Leaves you far less vulnerable and are able to recover if the mechanic doesn't work like shown here.
Edit: also I'm eagerly waiting for people to say use the shove animation here.
@TheUnusedCrayonGood on you for using hitting in your build. My D partner uses a DD and still rarely hits. I don't ever hit unless I'm shoving people in the crease with Big Tipper. We both use gold Stick 'Em Up and still pokes are absolutely one of the worst defensive mechanics in the game. Also, good on you for using regular hitting and not Hip-Checking all over the ice. Again, I know exactly what you're talking about when you make a good play on the puck and player and STILL come out on the losing end of the battle time and time again.

Oh I rarely hit lol. The only time I do is when I can afford to miss and it's 1 on 2. The hitting mechanics I find only work consistently north/south. It's just as awful as the pokecheck. You shouldn't need to hit somebody in the chest to get a consistent animation.
I abuse the hell out of hip checks because that's what you need to do in competitive play and thus far they've done nothing about it.
The hip check is sadly the only consistent tool defenders have lmao.
- Jammalammalam2 years agoSeasoned Veteran@TheUnusedCrayon LOL. Double sad is that I'm using Skill Stick and not Total Control, controls. So it takes two button presses instead of one to use it, so I have just made a built that leans heavily towards stick checking and still struggle with the one-sided mechanics.

- Jammalammalam2 years agoSeasoned Veteran@TheUnusedCrayon Accidently hitting that button is a travesty and the reason why I use skill stick controls. I'm not sure what EA did to make that button so sensitive because in 23, even with the puck, I wasn't accidently hitting that button to fake a shot. The sensitivity is wrong or something.

@TheUnusedCrayonKind of curious to see what build you're using.95% of the time I use a puck moving dman.
5% sniper if I'm getting angry with the fact I'm getting robbed ten times in 1 game.
Always have high def awareness, puck control, skating and deking. Typically sacrifice an amazing shot and have mediocre passing. I experiment between having extremely high stick checking vs not and I don't notice hardly any difference at all except for using dss.

@TheUnusedCrayonI got you. I'm usually TWD the majority of the time. I haven't reached P1 so I don't have one of the perks I usually use, which is silver Elite Edges. Already have silver Shutdown. I also don't have the two speed mini-perks that should get my speed to 93. I had Truck on my build last year, but it's missing this year (or will be added later). I'm high stick checking. High agility (For the twirl raggers at the dots). High Speed. 90+ Def Rating with a high 80's Pass.
It still boggles my mind. Gold Stick Em Up, 90+ Def and Stick-Checking w/ Silver Shutdown for 1 on 1 situations, and I can barely poke. DSS is a toss-up in effectiveness, but I use it to "try" and funnel players away from the center of the ice. - 2 years ago

All of bolded in this post makes me cringe so much that we are talking about a hockey game 😳😒
Looking at the last few pages of discussion in this thread, makes me even more NOT WANTING to ever, ever play online… They made these mode like a RPG or something ? GOLD STICKem UP, SILVER SHUTDOWN, what’s next SMELLING SALTS wonder ? Why can’t you just use a "standard" team, with "standard" players to play a freakin hockey game ???
So many things wrong with all of this, for me it’s really, really SAD 😫
It goes so well with the title of this thread tho….
Isn't it kind of insulting to the NHL and the sport of hockey
@Jammalammalam This post is not directed towards you in any way 😉

But why can’t you become a star in the league, dictated by your play, by your stats and this over time builds up your attributes like in BAP mode ? Can I be recognized in that EASHL league without having to grind for GOLDEN TRUCULENCE PANTS or SILVER SLAP'EM GOOD HOCKEY STICK ?
On top of them adding that goal CELLY, pressure icons and system on the ice and whatnot. Can I play a real good hockey game in its purest form ? Why can’t EA spend their time and focus on things that matters the most first and foremost ?
It's all these Fortnite business model elements in a hockey game that drives a guy like me bonkers !!!
