This should've been a body check and/or a backskate to angle the puck carrier off into the boards.
The forward also skated straight into the defender so the defender should’ve came in contact with the puck. You should be able to skate straight at the forward and take it instead of having to do a hit or conservative poke. You shouldn’t have to do all those things you mentioned when it’s the forward who messed up not the defense,
and the poke should’ve jarred it loose, the forward overskated and didn’t make any move to protect the puck from being taken.
