So what do you propose EA do to force players to dump and chase just because it's 'sim'?
Again, it’s not forcing EA to do anything to make it artificial… It’s supposed to be there by default. Organically… If the game played more like the REAL game, you would have to dump once in awhile, because sometimes you don’t have any other choice.
Its not FORCING them to dump just for the heck of it.
the game DOES play like the REAL game but it requires both players to commit to playing a sim style. When it comes to online competition, everything is fair game and expecting every single scenario to play out EXACTLY like it does in real life is completely unrealistic.
You will NEVER EVER see 100% realistic 1:1 simulation of ANY sport on ANY console made by ANY developer. I don't understand why some of you hold the EA to this completely unattainable standard.
And before anyone comes in here saying that I'm "saying the game is perfect" - kick rocks. I've got plenty of issues with this game that I've pointed out a number of times. If I didn't give this clip the Zapruder treatment, it would've been glossed over as a 'one touch pass'.
However, when it comes to this constant drumbeat of "EA doesn't know hockey" it baffles me that some of you actually believe this. It's also baffling that I can literally right now fire up an OVP game and execute real-world hockey plays and find success, and some will continue to say doing that is literally impossible. I can also make mistakes defensively and allow a player to score 'the same goal' due to my unwillingness or obliviousness to the tactic used to score it. That's my fault. Not the game. More people would find more joy with this game if they admitted to and learned from their defensive lapses rather than constantly make claims about the Hockey Intelligence of the people who develop it.
It seems like every disagreement on this page both sides are correct and I think this one is no different.
Why would any offensive player dump the puck in if the defensive player is giving up the blue line? Even in real hockey, statistics show entering the offensive zone with possession leads to way more scoring chances than a dump in.
The other side has a point about the game, given that no matter what rating the players are, the game is designed that it is almost always a better option to try and beat the defender than it is to play a perfect dump and chase. If dumping the puck was a little easier, defenders lost a little more speed when pivoting and being aggressive wasn’t more risk than reward, we could see more dump ins.
I do think the dev team has a pretty good grasp on hockey and most of the complaints are due to some type of specific tuning or tech limits, so it is certainly not fair to say they know nothing. In saying that, there are some very questionable decisions that have been made and defended that they aren’t without some criticism.
