Players shouldn't be forced to do anything. The freeodm [SIC] that this game allows is what makes it fun. People like to claim the offensive freedom trumps defensive skill, but that's not the case at all. I think people just hate defending and their hatred for it makes it seem like it's 'harder' than offense.
I find this a super odd take but you're entitled to your opinion.
Ya. That IS kind of an odd take. It might make more sense in the context of like Online VS or something but not in 6s I dont think? Regardless, if people do indeed "hate defense" why would that be exactly?
I would posit that the reason is because the position isn't (or at least historically - since 18 or perhaps even 14 - overall HASN'T been) all that interesting, fun or rewarding. Same with goaltending. Look, I love the challenge of playing D in this game but it is rarely fun or rewarding most days when you see what you are up against. I would say its a possibly a little better this year than the last couple. Part of the issue is that while we can analyze/critique plays until the cows come home, most of the time real world analyses don't apply cause the game mostly just doesn't really play out like it does IRL.

Mistakes on defense are amplified due to the importance of the position. Playing defence means taking ownership and responsibility, something that many people here don't like. One thing I've learned is the majority of people think they play this game perfectly, and when something bad happens to them, it's NEVER "oh maybe I shouldn't have poke checked here" -- it's always "the poke check is broken"
I am also guilty of this. There are times that I get mad while playing and think "man what the eff is going on here" only to see my captures after and recognize the mistakes I made that led to the thing that made me 'mad'.

people don't like that theyre held accountable for the AI's interpretation of positiong which 9/10 times does not align with real life positiong. People make a "hockey paly" on defense and punished for "bad" positioning because AI aren't programmed to play hockey. They're programmed to stand still in zones and prioritize zones over people. Thats not hockey.
So actaully, "hockey plays" are amplified in this game by outrageous agility, speed, accelrations, passing & shooting levels, and the AI's incorrect intepretation of position.
So yeah, I "hate" 1v1 defense. its super boring. its passive, you cant rely on your AI to do simple man-marking, therefore it feels nothing even remotely close to hockey. that why most people dont find it fun. its neither realsitc, engaging, or satisfying.
