Hitting has always been too easy to do - while I don't personally like the changes, the new pullback does increase the skill gap a bit which I'm all for.

It actually does the exact opposite because defenceman no longer have to be careful with the puck at the blue line because forwards can’t Physically strip them for rushes this year,
A lot of really bad defensmen are loving the way this game plays for them in the offensive zone- ei less skill

You could just get better at hitting? Pull back on RS, and push up right as you're about to touch the player. Boom.

@NeonSkyline21But why? Even when I do things properly and have hit assist maxed I still can't pull off consistent checking, they made way to many gameplay changes to the negative this year starting with removing hybrid control (that we now have to wait for), changing hitting mechanics (also harder to time hits even with the button press), the game is overall slower as well.

I’ve had zero issues with hitting once I got used to it. I strip defenders all the time with poke checks and hits. I mean my team is dominating other teams with time on attack and hits, and we are being rewarded for actually playing hockey for a change.

Agreed. The only 'issues' I've had are due to my current skill with the new controls. Sometimes, old habits kick in and I start flicking right stick for a hit. That doesn't mean 'hitting is broken' like most would claim, it means I'm a * and forget the new controls sometimes. Blame myself, learn and then dominate those who'd rather complain online than take the time to master the new meta.

Good point. Last year it was automatic if you drew it back and hesitated for a second too long, now it's almost impossible. I hate keep away.
- RelentlessJ692 years agoSeasoned Hotshot@TTZ_Dipsy I've been taking A LOT of elbowing penalties with the new hitting mechanics, so I've started making a majority of my hits hip checks because its so much easier.
- rsandersr472 years agoSeasoned Ace@RelentlessJ69 Yeah, I got called on that a couple times. Hitting probably needs a small buff/ accuracy modifier. It really is just too risky most times. Hip checks are FAR better than hits in almost every way.
- ChiTownSwagger912 years agoSeasoned Veteran@RelentlessJ69 so they took out the the cheesy arcade hits and now we are exploiting the hipcheck I see..
- RelentlessJ692 years agoSeasoned Hotshot@TasteofChicago91 If everyone else is gonna do it, why not? They never should have messed with the hitting mechanics. The other new controls, I have no problem with.

So you want a timing/aiming mechanic for hitting, but see no problem with not having one for one-timers?

I've mostly overcome my years of muscle memory and I'm missing hits a whole lot less. I find you really need to pick your spots carefully compared to previous years. My biggest complaint at this point is that the player getting hit seems to recover faster than the hitter. Fairly often I'll lay an opponent out flat on their back and they'll be up on their feet and back in the play before my player has finished with the follow-through animation.

One-timers are manual now with total control.

I don't remember ever saying that lol.
I'd like to think I'd excel at it with how my team gels together but the vast majority of players would have an extremely difficult time if all one timers were fully manual to the point it'd be scrapped almost immediately.
I don't think there is any vision control in the offensive zone like before and people are already posting how they keep hitting instead of shooting

Right, so it's all good when defensive actions require precise timing and analog movement, but offensively there is no timing or precise movement required. This is why the game is Harlem Globetrotters on ice and doesn't resemble hockey at all. Automated contortionist no-look puck receptions, one button Michigans, skating into the boards full speed with the puck with no consequences, etc.

The thing about changing previous controls & mechanics to increase the 'skill gap' is it only hurts the casual/novice players.
It took me 2 years to learn basic skill stick controls and if not for a pandemic, I might never of had the time to put in to do it. People that can put in 10+hours a week will always have an advantage, why increase that gap? Expert/Advanced players will never be hindered by changes to control settings or mechanics. They'll always be able to take the lowest rated team/players and plow through the majority of the player base.
The only shot a casual player has is a few easy moves that they can quickly learn to use and take advantage of in game. Hitting and pokes were the few things many of us could pull off in competitive play to make it worth the time and effort.
There was already a very large skill gap with the previous controls/mechanics. Removing and changing play to increase that gap will only lower the player base overall, making it even harder to find competitive games or any games at all.
After a week of play, NHL24 has been my least favorite gaming experience since returning to console play in 2018.
- Jammalammalam2 years agoSeasoned Veteran@TTZ_Dipsy It's so tiring to keep hearing about defensive skill gaps while one-button, broken, super-dekes are now in the game.

I have great difficulty with shoulder hitting using skill stick. There's something about the direction of skating or maybe speed changes once you push the right stick down, I always seem to miscalculate the distance & speed of the opponent or my own speed. This is mostly in EASHL. But I noticed that when I play in HUT with players like Sami Salo or Rasmus Dahlin, who I assume have good hitting stats, it's much easier to connect with hits. It's almost like they have some super auto hitting aim going on? Is it simply the case of having good stats in hitting?
After trying total control for hitting, I am not a fan. It makes hip checking ridiculously easy, that's pretty much it. Hip checking being way OP and ridiculous, please do something about it. And also, please do something about the hitting animations too, it's supposed to be SHOULDER hitting, not knee or head butting. Those animations look plenty weird.

I don't get this 'Hip check is OP' argument right now.
I think a LOT of people are too comfortable skating at full speed along the boards, and EA introduced a mechanic for defenders to shut that down. And now, you've got people mad about that.
If hip check gets a nerf because of this current backlash from people who can't avoid it, I'm gonna be really disappointed.

Not when you have people using X and b on Xbox all they do now is hold X guy bends over and keep gliding and if he gets near someone guy goes flying or using b for check no skill in that at all and let’s hold Y for one Michigan after another
