@canuck888801 It’s funny because I’ve had a rough time on cross-creases this year. I always feel like my pass is being blocked by the cpu AI or it’s an amazing save by the goalie
- @BoredJason13 Cpu AI can still pick off passes well.. they position poorly and let people skate right by them but they can pick it off. Goalies seem to make better saves if the defense is not in position to do anything. Sometimes it seems that it's better to only play the guy with the puck rather than the 1T..
@KidShowtime1867 with another post about not nerfing forwards or helping defense.. games being 6-7. You can be a defender standing RIGHT in front of the forward going for the 1T.. it can go right between your legs and get scored. It's not a deficiency on the player 🤣.. it's just some of us play defenseman and understand how handicapped they are and some don't. I'd love to watch you stream some night though! Yeah, this game there is no way to really defend just gotta mess them up and hope for the best. The defense is extremely handicapped. you can't play this game like real hockey imo gotta play it like EA hockey. A lot of times I pretend I'm gonna take the guy without the puck then switch last second and hope they're not quick enough to pass.. goalies make good 1T defense if you don't try to defend it but tbh there's sometimes no correct move or positioning.. sometimes they're gonna score no matter how well you play. If they pass right at the goalies crease it's for sure a goal. Your defender won't make any attempt to pick it (in fact you have a better chance of having the puck glance off your stick/ skate and go into the net for a goal than you do to pick it if you're near the crease) and the goalie won't make any attempt to stick it and doesn't have the time to make it across the crease. If they get into that position it's an almost for sure goal. Of course IF they go 1 on 1 with the goalie it's an almost for sure goal too. Everyone has a couple ways to score on a goalie from at least 3 diff angles. This dev team is in pretty far over their heads imo. No love has been given to the defense in 4 years? They've just given more and more tools for the offense. Now it's so bad playing defense that they had to nerf clearing the puck because they knew players were going to try to do that 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
If you have nerfed defense SO MUCH and given the offense so many tools that you knew players would try to clear the puck in even strength just to survive and wanted to FURTHER punish them.. wouldn't you think that's a problem? They knew players were gonna be struggling so much that they would CHOOSE to give the puck back just to get out of their zone and they don't see a problem... if they don't see the problem in that then to me they're the problem here lmao. Defense in this game is the most unrewarding grind fest. Every time I try to play good defense and feel I did everything right. I walk away having more questions than answers. Stick checking, stick lifting, body checking, intercepting.. NOTHING feels consistent, nothing feels like it's in a good place, nothing looks/ feels genuine to the game, to break up passes you gotta have your stick in PERFECT position, even then we have videos of the puck just going through people's stick blades. Meanwhile go behind and press triangle and you might get a goal 🤡 it may be easy to defend the lacrosse but I can still get multiple in a game esp against teams doing everything they can to stop the 1T
Can put 40+ shots on net to their 13, triple time on attack, way better passing, more take aways, less turnovers, you play the pass or the man.. their goalie makes athletic save after athletic save against 1t's while 2 on 0... they come into your zone, pass it across the crease.. puck hits your skate and goes into the net.... this is NHL 24, a game that attempts to look like hockey. I for sure have a winning record but I've also lost to teams who have 0 idea what they're doing, and beat teams that I felt outplayed me and we just got a couple lucky bounces.. they just went backwards with this game. I think the hitting (outside of hipchecks) is "better" personally I'd still turn down the effectiveness of big hits and make the shoves/ shoulder checks do a bit more but I digress. If we could just turn down hip checks and increase almost EVERYTHING else.

I've seen legit clips of people standing in the crease and the puck going 'through' them.
However, I've always stated that defending needs to be active. Many people make the same claims, "I'm standing right there and it goes through me!"
Don't stand there. Be active. engage the puck carrier or engage the intended recipient. Don't simply stand there. And Square up by feathering vision control. Don't commit to back/forward skating in these scenarios as it limits your reaction time and ability to disrupt a pass.
When trying to stop a cross-crease without engaging either the puck carrer or the recipient and/or squaring up in the passing lane, your success rate of disrupting that play shoots down considerably. Defensemen should know this.
I am actually a very good defender. The reason why I'm not here protesting against forwards and demanding defence be buffed is because I'm adept enough at the mechanics and understand them enough to compete with top 100 OVP players on a regular basis. I frustrate those players by angling them out, closing the passing lanes they're used to having wide open - and forcing them to try different offensive tactics, which opens the game up and results in a more dynamic flow.
When you're stuck defending the same way because you're convinced the game is designed to pigeonhole you into a certain way of defending, it won't be fun for you.

This defeatist attitude will ensure you're never going to be satisfied. I assure you - you can play this game like a real defender and find success.

Force your opponent to make a move. Trying to trick them into doing it will not work when you're playing against seasoned veterans who are skilled at this game. You need to develop skills with the tools in order to force the puck carrier to make a choice. OR, engage the recipient and force the puck carrier to make another decision. As a side note: If you're constantly seeing 2-on-1's - then there's a deficiency in your neutral zone or you're pushing too far into the O-Zone. Often times, the seeds of a goal are planted very early on and the 2-on-1's you're consistently facing are symptoms of other defensive deficiencies.

MOST players will have either rushed the puck carrier in this scenario Or they would've switched to forward skating (rather than keeping square with the puck carrier) allowing a sauce pass or a very fast pass to squeak through. Now, notice what I did with my defender? I'm feathering vision control so as not to completely turn my body away from the puck carrier. I feather it so that I am squared up with the puck carrier the whole time they're looking for a pass into the slot or across the crease". I never once enter a full backskate or a full forward-skate. I keep squared up, slowly close the gap (going unnoticed by a player looking for a pass) and knock the puck off with a well timed poke check.
it's not because you played all night to get an interception to post on the forum that it's working well! Theres more passes going thru my defenseman,when i'm in perfect position, than interceptions... when i try to pokecheck, 1 poke on 2 just bounce back on fwd stick , then im not in the play anymore because my d slow down when i poke but fwds can skate full speed and catch the puck that bounce of my pokecheck without losing speed... lol
i've played real hockey since 1992 and that's not looking like real hockey...
