NHL 24 cross Play

So I'm looking at buying NHL 24 on Xbox but had a few questions regarding the cross-platform playing. So I have an Xbox one S and would probably be playing on that for the most part. I would like to play with my fiends online but they all have new generation consoles (Xbox Series S/X and PS5), and after researching I found that you can play cross-platform but not cross generation. My brother has an Xbox Series S that I would be able to use from time to time when I want to play with them, but not regularly. So my question is, if I were to buy the Xbox one version of the game and were to play it on the Xbox Series S, would I be able to play with my newer console generation friends, or if I were to buy the Xbox Series S version, would I be able to still play that on my Xbox One S, or would I need to purchase the X-Factor edition which includes both versions (I would rather not since it costs nearly double the other 2 version, but if that's the only way I guess I have no choice)
