It seems like they are not able to add them back in at this time from what I have been told but maybe at some point for other games, but lets be realistic who knows if that is the case or not. It's sad cause it a such a small thing but makes a huge difference to the in-game presentation.

I also really miss this and have no clue why EA feels the need to take away things that are so little yet help with presentation so much.

It’s really annoying I never know who the starting goalie is on the opposite side.

Yes, it made it fun to get shut-outs as you could then see how many you have in the Goalie intro.
I know you can go into the stats and see this, but its not the same.
And when you're hammering a team and they switch goalies, having this announced and seeing the cut scene just made it more fun.

Basically EA believes it is fine for us at players to have to pause the game and open up the instant replay to see who the goalie is, which is essentially breaking the immersion of the in-game flow. I used to do it every game but ended up giving up till I played one offline franchise game where an NHL team started a 49 overall goalie. Now I'm back to looking every game. But I still fully believe this was done to speed up the overall online experience (where a large part of the player base is). Most of the presentation design choices are solely based around that (the new goal celebrations) which is why small things that made the offline experience better will end up being passed up on. Just look at at prior EA NHL games. NHL 14 is a good example as it had an intro to the game and goalie intro that is far superior to their "improved" intros they have now.

We may not realize but they also removes the option to see goalie changes mid game. So now you will just randomly see a new goalie in net for the CPU. Again another reason to speed the game up. All of it can't be related to technical issues as they were running it fine on an older and very aged engine. Take it for what it is but hard to see it any other way. What they forget is that the offline player base is the reason why EA is where they are.
