Online VS Issues

Where to begin. I have been playing NHL since 93. Once online was available I jumped in headfirst and over the last 3 NHLs it has become all I play. For clarity, NHL 23 I played over 1200 online VS games. I have also been playing actual hockey for 3 decades (rep to now men's league). I am not here shaking my fist at the sky. NHL 24 was definitely a step forward from 23 in a lot of ways, but SO MANY bad decisions were made that in the end, made the game play just as bad as 23 IMHO.

Here are somethings I have noticed that make zero sense in NHL 24 Online VS:

1) Why is there no "Mutual Quit" option? The EA servers have always sucked, and will always suck. I play many games online, NHL is the online one that lags, kicks me offline for no reason, and has so much trouble staying connected. When those games happen, if you don't quit before puck drop you take an L. Why can EA not bring back mutual quit so when both players are suffering from bad connection, you can leave the game and not get dinged?

2) Why when the EA servers kick you off, and tells you so, does your record take an L? The server did the kicking, bc it is garbage and unstable, that shouldn't be an L. I would confidently say 15-20% of my losses come from this, and I am have dedicated internet in my apartment, in the same room I play, which is the highest level Bell Mobility offers. It is not my connection.

3) Why are the pause functions SO SLOW. They load like 1996 dial up. There is often not enough time to get to the goalies swapped. How is this possible? It was well documented as an issue in NHL 23 and still hasn't been addressed.

4) Why can you not edit your lines or change goalies between periods? The one pause per game thing I get, but real teams swap tendies between periods all the time. That is a no brainer.

5) Hip checks? Really? How often do we see them in the real NHL? The game is too fast and the players too skilled. Get rid of this dumb function and make hitting better.

6) On that note: Up/Down to hit? REALLY??? This completely took out hitting as a viable defensive strategy. The dive forward thing? Is this mortal combat? And often when you do time it perfectly, and connect shoulder to chest, guys walk right through with no reaction. I know guys are strong, but if you hit someone dead in the chest you will at least slow them down. Hitting is a huge part of the game, from nudges and bumps to huge open ice bangers, and yet it is very very hard to execute any hit in NHL 24 online VS game play.

7) Why are stick lifts so hard to execute without being penalized (in both 23 and 24)? Stick lifts happen CONSTANTLY in the NHL. In battles up and down the ice, before engaging for the puck, even if a player thinks the puck is coming to an opposing players they give them a little lift. Yet in 23 and 24 they barely connected, and 7/10 end up in a penalty. How can something so pivotal to the game be executed so poorly in online play?

8) Poke checks - if I had a dollar for every time I connected with a poke check, or got in the way of a flat pass and nothing happened I'd be rich. This needs to be fixed. Pucks don't travel through stick blades placed in front of them. And I am not talking sauce passes, those make sense and actually function really well. I am talking poke check out, guy flat passes it, poke check is RIGHT where the puck is on the ice and nothing happens.

9) Why does it feel like you are turning a house boat when trying to do edge work. And before a mod chimes in with "that is the tired player function", no, I am talking fresh line, full bar, full energy. The turns are SO SLOW, so are the stops, so are the quick turns, the accepting passes. It is all so slow. Every watched the NHL? These guys stop and turn on a dime, should the players in the game not be able to do that?

10) Why can we not customize our own controls? As in, give us a blank controller and let us choose a mix of the presets you have created that it seems no one likes? Neither of the choices for 24 make sense. Let us choose our own.

11) Why do the players bump into each other/get in each others way so often? Like clumps of them bunching up, out of position. Sure, sometimes this happens IRL and it is a laugh, but it is constant in online VS. And I am not talking about a corner battle, or front of the net battle. I am talking about 3 players (one being me moving the puck) all clumping together and no one can go anywhere.

This is the second year in a row I have been incredibly disappointed with my purchase. You see the bad reviews in the press, you see the online boards. I get a lot goes into making a game none of us will every understand or be able to do ourselves, arm chair experts I assume you call us all. But it really feels like no one that worked on this game has actually played hockey, or watched an NHL game.

    Hi there, @GussChigginz

Thanks for all the feedback. It's really appreciated. One thing I wanted to comment on is how you mention our servers kicking you off. Online Versus games don't take place on our servers. This mode uses a peer to peer connection. This means either you or your opponent is the host. If you are frequently disconnecting, it's quite possibly an issue with your connection. Let me know if you'd like to go through some connection troubleshooting.

  • I was waiting for this response. The canned, boiler plate answer on here for connection issues on EA.

This is not my connection. I have already troubleshot that with the following:

               - Upgrade my internet to the best bell mobility (the biggest provider in my country) has to offer.

               - Upgraded my modem to the best one they offer

               - Moved my modem to the room my PS4 is in

               - I remove other devices from wifi when I play

               - I only play Online VS matches with an all green "good" rated connection

I tried to attach a video I took from a match which had a green, full bar, "good" connection rating upon match load up and was middle of the day. The .mov is not supported, but happy to forward it if you provide an email for customer support.

First period was normal game play, then randomly in the second period this in-between-stoppage mega choppiness began. The glitching starts as we line up for the draw, and continues for about 10 seconds until it goes back to smooth again. During the choppiness it is impossible to control my players movements, everything is a second or two delayed. In this case it cost me 2 goals.

In the video I show that when I checked the connection in the pause menu it shows a strong, stable connection. Zero reason for this to happen.

So, instead of passing the buck and saying it is on me and my connection, which it clearly isn't, explain why this happens. What else can I do to have a stable online gaming experience with EA aside from having the best internet available to me in my country? It is also worth noting that all other online style games I play do not have these issues, only EA games.

    @GussChigginz

There are 2 issues here. One is that you're on a wireless connection. You are never going to get as good a connection wireless as you do wired. There is a lot of information on this already posted online that you can look up. The bottom line is, if you're going to be required to use a wireless connection, make sure it's 5g and not 2.4. That still is going to leave you susceptible to interference and lag/disconnects are to be expected. No matter how close your console is to your router, it's still wireless. The other option, if using a wire isn't possible, is to get a powerline or MoCA adaptor. Personally, I use powerline adaptors and they have been an excellent solution. MoCA will provide a better connection. However, they're more expensive than powerline adaptors.

The other issue is that you're not playing on our servers. As mentioned previously, Online Versus uses a peer to peer connection. Either you or your opponent are hosting the game. That means one of you is the "server" that you're playing on. So, our servers are only involved in matchmaking and then again when the game ends to send those results back to our servers. Also, if you happen to be in a more remote location, it's possible you're connecting to opponents that are far away. That's going to have a big impact on the connection. Especially if your opponent is hosting the game.

The connection will fluctuate. You may see it as strong, but then suddenly hit a lag spike or disconnect. That should be reflected in the connection meter in game though.

I totally understand you don't have this issue in other games. Every game is different. NHL is pretty demanding of a wireless connection. You have 12 players on the ice with a puck traveling at high speed and constantly changing direction. This is going to need a very stable connection that wireless just doesn't provide 100% of the time. You're going to be susceptible to not only the traffic on your network, but other signals outside of those. If the router is in another room you have to deal with walls that also contain wiring which can compound interference issues. I know it's now in the same room. I'm just using this as an example of how easy it is to interfere with wireless signals.

Using a wire is one of the biggest upgrades you can do to get a better connection. However, in the case of Online Versus, you're still dependent on the location of your opponent and them possibly hosting the game.

  • I got a LAN cable. Hooked it up. Am only playing full green bar games, And still the same problems.

    1) Laggy players. Feels like moving a house boat to turn them. Select them.

    2) Still experiencing the in between whistle glitching

    3) Players like Hughes, McDavid, McKinnon, who are the fastest in the game can't get around low level defensemen.

    4) Whole team lagging when keeping puck away during PK.

    See the connection speed below.

Now please explain how this is my connection somehow? What is the excuse this time?

Top city in the world, top internet, great connection speed, hard wired in, "good" connection rating to my opponent.

    Go ahead, I'll wait.

    @GussChigginz

The other issue, as I previously mentioned, is that you're not on our servers. Online Versus uses a peer to peer connection. The quality of the connection is based on not only yours but your opponent's as well.

If you want to test this out, try playing a mode on dedicated servers such as HUT or WoC. If your connection is fine there, chances are good you're connecting to someone else with either a poor connection or they are not in your immediate region.

@EA_Aljo Hello! I completely agree with the person above. But I have a global issue that concerns the whole of Europe) Tell me, when will the swamp effect, handicaps and other assist functions be removed from HUT and Wo mode? Why is everything perfectly fine in Online Versus mode and it used to be like this in both HUT and Woc....This problem fundamentally changes the gameplay of the game. If in Online Versus I am in the TOP 300 across Europe, then in HUT mode, no one can do this because of the swamp effect, because player cards with ratings under 95 and various AI assistants solve 90% of any match. How can this be considered fair game when everything depends on the AI assistants?
