The aesthetic stuff would be cool to see in-game but unfortunately there is a bunch of other stuff they need to fix first.
I don't think most players want to see gear malfunctions and masks popping since it can artificially mess with the flow of the game
At this point, I think it would be a good idea if EA found some way to basically have two forms of hockey in one title:
- A form of hockey that mimics realism, with more emphasis on the lucky side of the sport
- The esport/competitive video game form of hockey, which attempts to eliminate any outside factor that would typically affect a hockey game.
I think my main example has to be the frequency of shots missing the net in real life compared to EA NHL. In real life, teams miss the net, on average, with 21.7% of their total shot attempts at 5v5 (which comprises about 79% of a full regulation hockey game). In my testing so far with NHL 24's base sliders, I have yet to see this number peak above 17%, and usually percentages have fallen inbetween 8% and 12%. However, this is understandable for a video game. Imagine how frustrated players would be if, of all of their shot attempts that weren't blocked (NHL average for shots attempts blocked is 28.5%), nearly one in every three shot attempts missed the net?
Some things just have to be sacrificed to keep the game actually fun. The only people who would accept being inconvenienced by luck are the super-realists (myself included). I don't think we make up a large portion of the player base though.
