The direction of this game is an overall disappointment and has been for many years. It seems the consumer wants the game to be realistic, but EA wants it to be arcade. Making a game arcade is basically the "band-aid" for all the issues. Why don't the defenders approach the incoming skater? It's arcade. How can a player skate through all the players and go right to the net? It's arcade. Adding "special skills" to a player is basically removing any simulation aspect. The game should play to the player ratings, period. That includes game speed.
As the game is now, the sliders and player ratings wash each other out. The thought process behind designing it like that is mind boggling. Player acceleration rating, player acceleration slider...shooting rating and shooting slider. Raise one, it affect the other. Also, each year it seems the sliders don't work they way they should. EA, if you're going to keep this odd design choice, here is my suggestion:
Start all sliders at 0. As you raise a slider, that is what affects the game/player. If it's at 0, it plays to the player ratings. Don't set the default sliders in the middle, it makes no sense because it means there is already an unwanted affect, thereby creating these odd player skills.
Remove the attribute effect slider, or again, start it at 0. Let the player's rating dictate the player skill.
Presentation: You have to bring it back. Not sure the thought process to remove this as presentation makes/breaks a game. Look at NFL2k5. They had highlights from games around the league. It created an immersive experience and that was done on an old video game system. We have newer and better systems so there are no excuses. I'm seeing cinematics of player celebrations that aren't even selected for that player! This kills the realism.
Gameplay wise.....the hitting is awful. Why? That hitting animation is ridiculous. You can't dump the puck either. When on position lock, your teammates get the puck, skate into the wall, then up the ice following a motion path. Every game doesn't need to be won by 1 goal. Let the player skills determine the outcome. It feels like EA is trying to capture the excitement of one hockey game, and put it in every game you play. Some games in real life are boring...some games are won by 5 goals. I can count on one hand how many times I've won by more then 2 goals. Also, remove the full "last minute" of play. No one asked for that and it ruins the stats, because you're basically getting an additional 5 minutes of play. This causes all those last minute goals, which makes the game feel so repetitive.
No all star game or outdoor stadium, even though in real life, they have played 40+ outdoor games.
No ability to play 3v3 tournament using full roster. NHL Threes is a fixed small roster, unless I'm mistaken.
Franchise menu is clunky. Options should be across the top of the screen for standings, stats, etc. Easier navigation.
World of CHEL is useless for offline players. You record stats for everything else, but offline CHEL. I want to see how many goals player has scored in CHEL. Also, the stats displayed above the player head is always wrong.
The game needs a revamp bad.
