Re: NHL 24 Presentation discussion

Sadly, this is always going to be a losing battle for the offline player base. It has been said in these forums a lot is to do with a lower player count but if you really think about it, the player count is lower cause of the lack of Innovation, removal of prior feature (trade phone as an example), lack of interest fixing bugs and glitches and removal of presentation in franchise mode (goalie intros, goalie changed in game, they used to have the 3 stars skate on the ice as a cut scenes, players would come out from the walkway and bench and through those props you can still add in create a team, replays showing more, showed the crowd more). Plus the complete lack of any interest or care to BAP for anything about it (Innovation or bug fixes), a mode that used to be good in the older gen games. What they don't realize is that it is all cause and affect (you don't try hard enough we are not going to play or buy it year after year) but I'd guess that is the reasoning they want so they can focus solely on the online experience, which is sad cause if you think about it EA on a whole was built by the offline player base going back to the Super Nintendo days. Now a days it's not good enough to just buy the game, you need to "rent" cards for the year (using real world money), buy the new season pass and buy celebrations (again real world money) to actually matter as a player in the game. This is an EA design everywhere and the removal of content and adding back in will always be a tactic they use in their attempt to show that they improve on the game each year. It is not all bad cause some of the new features in this game are good in principle but lack the polish for them to be good (op hip check, stamina works differently for AI and user for pressure system). Other features like players indicating line changes seemingly doesn't seem to exist from NHL 23 in NHL 24, unless they are very rare now as I have played multiple games and it does not have the indication anymore, plus the players calling for the puck like in NHL 23 is another feature that seemingly seems to be gone as well. Going back to the presentation, this is already lost seeing that a game like FC 24 which easily makes more money then NHL has removed some of it's presentation with the reasoning "people just skip it anyways". With that EA mindset and the mention of lower player counts, we can only ever expect to see minimum to no changes or fixes at all for presentation or any offline modes.

Features aren't specifically removed just so they can be returned later as new. I know people like to throw this around as if it's fact, but it's really not. NHL 15 on Xbox One and PS4 was basically starting over. There were many years where features were added over time. With the new generation, at the time, NHL 15 was a barebones game. We've been returning old features, but also improving upon them. We can't take several years worth of updates and knock them all out in a single year. We're not going to remove a feature just so it can be marketed as new later. That really makes no sense. If a feature doesn't make the transition to later games, there's a reason for it. If it returns, again, there's a reason for it, but most definitely not just because we need to market the game as new. No matter how much changes, people are going to call it a copy and paste.

@EA_Aljo I did not state copy and paste in my post at all. I stated that stuff like hip check or glass cracking (as an example) is being used as a selling point for NHL 24 in the deep dive but is an old feature, which was brought back (not upgraded really at all either and doesn't follow the correct physics either) If it wasn't that important it shouldn't have been used as a direct selling point. It was quick to strip down of a game (NHL 15) which was basically a drmo but sold for full price and it has been how many years and we are still missing how much content? Look at the intros that were added on NHL 23 how many new ones were added this year, how long will it take to get all 32 teamsndone. If stuff like hip checks and glass cracking was not removed in the first place that time could have been used to work on them instead. Innovation is based on growth not taking one step forward and 3 steps back. Plus, it's a bit odd the focus was solely on that point and not any other part of my comment. Does that mean it is true?

I was just saying it's a common complaint. Not one from you specifically.

Of course we're going to mention returning features when revealing the game. We're not saying they've never been in the game before. My point was that it seems people accuse us of removing features only so we can add them later and call them new. There is not an ounce of truth in that.

I chose that to respond to because I took the rest as feedback.

@EA_AljoI get that and in some ways it's not but for my side of it being true look at gameplay for NHL 14 where they have a full intro and light show with the team logo, plus showing the team coming from the hallway and bench, plus the announcer announcing them onto the ice (which does not happen in the new game intro plus it's longer too and includes goalie intros). Also national anthems were in prior games as well. This is what was used on your NHL 23 web page by the marketing team. "PRESENTATION
All-new celebration options let you celebrate every big moment, from the Stanley Cup trophy hoist to fresh post-goal light shows. On-ice projections for NHL teams, national teams, and more immerse you in the moment, even in offline modes". See how all of this is was listed using the words "All New". It's hard to not take this as them promoting as a new feature, correct? Even though I'd say it's loosely upgraded (the generic new openings are actually not improved from NHL 14 at all and offer less) Here is the link to the YouTube video highlighting the intro: https://youtu.be/ohGZ1PKuB7c?si=7B1gn8ZW6BYKnZBT

All new meaning it's containing new presentation features. Obviously, that ended up changing with 23 due to technical issues.

@MasterB89And my meaning is that the skating and the standard game speed in NHL 14 also looks much better than in newer NHL titles. Only the better graphics in newer games are a plus. They made this overpowered to fast gameplay speed for online, otherwise it maybe would be to easy, but looking far from real and a bit funny. Will wait for NHL 25 and skip 24

@EA_Aljo Sadly, technical issues which are always bad and can be out of anyone's control, it doesnt change the fact that it was listed and promoted under "all new" features, when it is clearly a returning feature, that is just how it shows. Also, using the video as a comparison you can say that the new intros are not even upgraded from prior ones as they offer less overall. (less animations and worse in game realism). Imagine we had this form of intro with the updated graphics and lighting. It would amazing. Not promoting something incorrectly or coming out and saying we had technical issues but we will do we can to make it up to you by adding stuff back in would have gone a long way to actually showing support for your offline player base.

Thanks for all the feedback on this. Hopefully, we'll see improvements to the presentation in future games.

@Froommey I wish I can say things will be better for NHL 25 but I just can't see it. I used to have hope for better but after last year it's fully gone. It's sad when games like NHL 14 don't show their age as much as you think they should, especially when being compared to new titles which run on better hardware and game engines. That really is a sign on how many steps back the games have taken compared to what forward progress they have gone.

    1. The Jumbotron and the LED ring (the stupid speaker graphic that’s been in the game for 10 plus years) around the upper bowl both look like Nintendo graphics. Absolutely terrible looking! Way overdue for an update.

    2. In the NHL, all back up goalies wear a ball cap on the bench.

    3. How about introducing the starting goalies before the game?

    4. How about giving us more than .5 of a second to select lines or even press the button to do a custom celly? This is EXTREMELY ANNOYING!!!

For real - the lack of time to adjust strategies and lines on the fly, between whistles, is crazy.

@KidShowtime1867Sadly, that all goes along with their idea of a more fast paced arcade style game for the online experience. Part of what full presentation offered was not just the visual aspect but gave us more time to strategize between whistles via usage of showing the bench, the crowd, relays. Also, not sure if it's just me but the line change indicators players did in NHL 23 seem to be missing in NHL 24 so there is no indication when they go or if you know they will go. Also, players calling for the puck using their stick is also not prominent in the game anymore over target passing.

I can’t believe this is almost 10 years ago. The presentation was much better.

I remember when they added props in NHL 15 with the promise of getting back to NHL 14 levels. I believe this should've been prioritized over adding essentially loot box cosmetics and outdoor ice rinks to EASHL, as well as "celly tunnels'" over the last 9 releases, but that's just me. I know we all have our own preferences and EASHL is certainly a big game mode...but that being said, there's unused props in EASHL so you again would think that would be a priority from a presentation standpoint rather than having avatars fly in like superman in a pregame screen.

I don't when exactly we took the wrong turn, but I know that we indeed took a wrong turn somewhere.

Definitely agree, if they brought back the pre-game intro presentation from NHL14 and added Goalie intros, I can't even describe how happy this would make the majority of off-line franchise players....

2k10's light shows, broadcast package, announcers, goal horns, ice and puck sound effects, and lighting played MUCH bigger parts in my enjoyment of that game than they should've. The ability to go to NHL.com to see screenshots from CPU games, daily scoreboards, box scores, then also the ability to play any game within my franchise mode no matter which team was mine made the league feel alive! It was so cool! Nothing has come remotely close presentation wise to me, not even 14.

Yes, I recall a time when each year I would buy both 2K and EA NHL,

2K just for the presentation and EA NHL for the gameplay. Now, unfortunately we only have the one option.

My dream as well would be for EA to take even SOME of the presentation that was in the 2K series and add it in. Not sure if any of the EA devs have actually ever even played any of the 2K games.

Really hope we see a big change in presentation for NHL25. Need goalie introductions back and spotlight players shown on ice during warmups with their season stat line. More stories through the season making franchise feel alive, highlighting rivalries trades players returning to face old team etc....Show us box scores from around the league, have a ticker on the franchise main screen showing standings and stat leaders. NBA2K does this nicely.
