Personally, my issue isn't really with the total control scheme per se. My issue is that EA didn't seem to consider the consequences of making things like the lacrosse shot or hip checks a single button press. And they certainly didn't adjust the effectiveness of those actions to reflect how easy they are to pull off now.
Consider the lacrosse shot. Up until NHL 24 I could count on one hand the number of attempted lacrosse shots I would see in any given year, and I don't think I ever had one scored on me because most attempts weren't even able to successfully get the shot off. Now with a single button press anybody can pull it off and it's exposed how weak the goalies are to the shot and how poor the defensive tools are when trying to stop it. Even with the nerf in the last patch it's success rate is way too high IMO. Assuming it won't be removed from TC, I think it needs a few more adjustments. First, the shot should be flubbed at a very high rate across the board. Second, you should need to set up behind the net to do it. The biggest issue this year is the ability to skate full-speed behind the net and quickly trigger the lacrosse shot. It essentially forces defence to commit a player behind the net which is just silly. And lastly the goalies need to be better at stopping the shot.
As for the hip check, it's not really a hip-check button. It's a "I'm going to squat and turn myself into a human land-mine" button. We're back to NHL 18(? somewhere around there ) hip checks which acted in the same fashion. If an NHL 24 hip-check behaved like a real-life hip-check putting it on a single button wouldn't be an issue. Instead we have a single button hit where the effectiveness isn't tied to any player attributes and doesn't take into consideration speed, angle or what body parts are hitting what. On top of that they made regular body checking much riskier if you miss which just makes the hip-check even more attractive to spam. We'll see what the patch does to address this, but I'm skeptical.
Minus the hipcheck and lacrosse ease when introduced there isn't anything wrong with it. Everyone can use the controls and be on an even playing ground when it comes to dekes. This new control scheme is very user friendly and a control scheme doesn't make you a great player anyway. It's what you do with the abilities that does. We all know they aren't going to ditch the new setup either. Sure they still need to tune some stuff with it but that is to be expected with a 1st year introduction of something.

Having a button combo for older hipchecks makes much more sense - I totally agree with that, I just really didn't like the specific one they used because it was very unintuitive and hindered your play.
Hipchecks definitely should have been tuned for single button use so we'll just have to see how today's patch addresses that. I personally think they added the Michigan to TC exactly because it was so hard to do and felt like it was a waste (which it was at the time) adding it.
Also, Hybrid and 94 controls actually did have their advantages - especially when it came to faceoffs. Not a perfect system by any means but makes for a decent all in one setting that can be further tweaked.

Hybrid and 94 faceoff was indeed their only advantage, it's not really comparable to what you get with total control though. And after 2-3 faceoff you could almost tell if they were using the old controls, all we had to do was to start using counters and they were screwed, not so much of an advantage in the end.

Minus hipcheck and michigan I wouldnt have a problem with it, I would call it skill stick 2.0. But right now TC trump all the other controls, this is not an even ground even if what you do of the abilities and your hockey IQ is worth 90% of your gameplay.
Shooters always have 2-3 sets of controls, they are all equally good or bad. You don't get a control setting that allow you to make a 360 no scope head shot with the press of one button, the only difference is how you prefer your buttons mapped.
I'm going to test out the reverse hit change later, if it feel a lot better I'm just going to switch back to TC...because why staying on a build that make it unnecessarily more difficult after all.
Btw, are they going to add pin board back for player with the puck on TC? I didnt see anything about this yet.- KingPyrrhus9812 years agoNew Adventurer
I just played my first game of online versus against a rando. This dude tried to Michigan like 10 or 15 times... never landed them. Even though I won it was so annoying. I also think you shouldn't be able to do one tuck dekes and tog drag shots with one button.
If people want to use total control that is fine, but I don't want to play against them. I don't think this idea would work in WoC, but I think one v one modes like Online Versus or HUT we should be given a choice to exclude people using total control from our matchmaking pool. That way total control isn't removed and I don't need to deal with them.
